Well guys, Have an old IDE HDD that I want to be mobile so figured that would work, also it's firewire which is faster than usb 2.0

I've had pretty good success with all the external drive enclosures I've used over the years.
TBH though, I don't think you'd notice any difference between USB 2.0 or IEEE1394 (firewire) since the limiting factor is going to be the throughput of the drive itself. Most IDE HDDs are capable of max 100Mbps; while USB2.0 is capable of 480Mbps and IEEE1394 has a rated throughput of 400Mbps.

USB2.0 is more versatile (and readily available) anyways; IEEE1394 never really caught on except for DV camcorders.

Yup.
And he's pretty much right. The only things I've seen use firewire are DV cameras and audio recording interfaces.

I have two enclosures with different drives and I have them daisy chained on firewire. That is a pretty sweet feature firewire has, but if you were only going to have one drive I think USB would be fine, unless you want to conserve your USB ports.

I personally don't find that to be an issue due to the ever increasing number of USB ports on motherboards and the availability of USB hubs.

I am using a laptop (4 USB) and I would be short if I had USB hard drives. He is talking mobile as well, so who's to say it isn't for a laptop? I also think daisy chaining is pretty sweet, since you can have multiple drives connected through only one port.
