Monitor Frame Painting. - Overclock.net

Not sure sure of Frame being the right word to use.. But you all know what i mean. The edge that borders the monitor panel itself.

Basically, i'm fed up with then both being silver, and i want to paint them black (maybe with white buttons on one, and some stencilwork on the other which has the larger edge.).

What i want to know is, the best method to go about doing this. Will i need to sand anything? Primer? The surfaces i plan to paint are both plastic and both fully removable from the monitors themselves. Ideally i could just remove the frames, paint them and slap em right back on, but i'm not so sure how that would stand up with regards to longevity.

So guys? What's the best way to paint my monitor fronts?!!

Well after disassembling them I assume it would be like painting any other piece of plastic there are multiple threads around this place that deal with just such a thing.

Take it off, and then Krylon plastic paint. No primer, just spray light (LIGHT <--- Key word) coats until it's even and looks good. It's better to have a dozen light coats than two/three heavy ones.

Definately take off the front piece. Not worth risking damage to your monitor. Be very careful when removing it from the internals. Depending on how they are built, some models have parts mounted on the front panel as well.
Having recently done some plastic remodeling might I suggest doing some light sanding on the surface. It will help the paint stick to the panel much better than just spraying it. Very light pressure as you don't want to groove the surface. Since you are concerned of longevity, I would consider using a clearcoat to protect it. At least 2 coats of clear if not 3. I have a link to my keyboard mod thread below in my signiture area which has a number of pictures including what I used and descriptions. That should give you an idea of what you will (could/should) be doing. I hope this helps

Ahh yes i remember reading your thread Vargess, looks tidy.

What grit sandypaper did you use? The finer stuff?

And then standard spraypaints?

Yup, use higher grit sandpaper. You don't want to scratch up the plastic but just removed the thin coat smoothly

Use spraypaint specifically designed for plastic.

Yes, the higher the grit, the better. You don't want grooves in the plastic. Even a single deeper groove will stand out once you paint it.

The primer that I used can be sprayed on plastic. I generally put between 2 and 4 coats. Depending on the primer, allow each coat to dry and lightly! sand each coat and wipe clean with a lint free cloth. Then put the color on. Don't sand the color though! I usually put 2 to 3 coats of color which shoud be plenty. I have found you can use cheaper color paints not specifically designed for plastic as long as you have quality primer job done, which is why I use 2 coats or more.

I'n not too concerned about colour, as it's gonna be plain black (maybe with some white stripes), so vibrance and depth of colour doesn't really matter too much. I just want rid of this awful silver colour.

Lets see if i got this right... Dismantle > High Grit Sand > Prime x2 > Paint x2.

Should be easy!

Oh but of course! Just need to find the time in-between putting up new guttering to actually do this to my beloved screens.
