hi every one this is my new thread here i am a new member .

i just picked up a dell 510 and wish to upgrade i am hearing different things from different people as what cpu it will support and if there is way to over clock. if someone has any experience with this model any help will be great and i thank you in advance.

p4 3.0 ht
just picked up a pair of 1gb pc2-5300 sticks will be removing the stock ram 2x512
160 gb
intergrated video i know working on that might be getting a geforce 8400gc with 512mb ddr2

send your suggestions or your experience on whats the highest cpu it will support

I just sold my E510 on eBay, so I'll offer insight as I know it.

It is a Socket 775, I had a Pentium D 3.0GHz. You are unable to overclock this system (as with all Dells and pre-builts).

It has a PCIe slot, so alot of the newer video cards will fit it. I'd suggest going with an 8600GT, then you have the performance you need hopefully without having to change out the PSU.

I had 3GB of RAM (2x512MB stock, 2x1GB self-installed) since you won't benefit from more than that on a 32-bit system.

I could possibly be wrong concerning your chipset, and if I am, I'm sure someone will call me out. But if it is a Socket 775, any of the duo's or quad's will fit. It's a great pc, I just like building better

It will not support the 65nm, or 45nm CPU's. I'm 95% sure that it has the Intel 925 chipset, therefore only supporting Pentium 4's and under. Not even a Pentium D is supported with that chipset. I'm sorry to say, but you wasted your money on the E510 because that design is 2 years old.

i was told that a core 2 duo and the quad wont be supported by bios the chipset might but not the bios if i wanted a dual core i would have to install a pen D which is dual core but i would like to put in a core 2 or quad and yes it is a 775 socket

sis sandra saw the chipset as 82245g rev-a3 and i beleive that cpu-z has as i945g is that correct

this computer is a dell e510 p4 3.0 ht. with 1gb of ddr2, 160 sata 2 7200,dvd, wireless dell keyboard and mouse and a dell 19" lcd diplay all in great condition and fully functional for $140 you still think i wasted my money.

If you "just" purchased the Dell, perhaps you can return it and build one yourself, and install the C2D/Q that you want.

OK I'm not going bash you for buying a pre-built My sig started out prebuilt. Anyways I would recommend you get a 400W+ power supply because Dells and most other prebuilt systems (HP, Acer, Compaq) use bare minimum power supplies for the hardware. After that I would say up to a 8600 and you won't get performance bottleneck from your CPU.
Basically I don't think you can go any further CPU wise... Maybe E2xxx... I dunno.
I would suggest upgrading the power supply no matter what.

Agreed. Definitely upgrade the PSU before any pricier components get installed.

yes you are definitly right about the psu i think its 305 watt stock i will have to replace it if i am going to put a high end video card.but about the cpu i saw that people have the pen D in it iam trying to figure out if someone got a core 2 duo in theirs.i am starting to beleive that a pen d is the highest i can go.
