if you have an IDE one, you need to use the molex connection to get the power for the LED... here is the guide from dae-ja-voo for IDE connections:

Not at all. i had an issue where the drive wouldn't close properly, then open again, but I worked out that a bit of hot glue had come loose and was in between the drive tray and the backwall. Cut it off, and away it went. In terms of performance, it physically can't affect it, it isn't doing anything to the laser or motor.

Oh that? Not unless you're running blue laser drives of some sort, and even then, it's unlikely.
