Default How to:ide to usb hard drive diy?

I got an old 15gig IDE hard drive laying around. Was wondering how do I go about wiring the IDE to a usb connector can it be done yourself or you need to purchase an adapter. I kind of have a case made right now thought it would be fun to make the USB hard drive my self. been googling but my nets acting up taking ages to load a page.

i think you have to use an adapter
because its more than just a pin to pin sort of bag
it needs something to make them speak to each other properly

you'd have to basically make an IDE controller from scratch, and connect it to a USB chip, and translate instructions between them. It would probably take a dedicated lab a month or more to get something like this working, you're better off buying an external enclosure that has IDE port(s) in it and connects via USB.

there are some standalone IDE-USB adapters cables that you could use in conjunction with a custom made enclosure, or purchase an enclosure already equipped with an adapter.

There are plenty of adapters you can buy, which are inexpensive.

Something like this;
