I have one that I just did this last week.
__________________So last week I started working with a buddy of mine to put my water cooling rig together. All went well. Leak tested for 24 hours and everything was just fine and dandy at his house. So we take the 100 lb beast back to my house and I hook it all in and then I plug my headphones into the jack at the top of my case. ***!!!! My fan control turned on.....***! But sure knowing that this shouldn't be happening I blow it off b/c I want to get into Call of Duty 4 and beat some butt. WHOOPS BAD IDEA!!!! I get into windows and folks we have lift off. I swear to god I thought a rocket was launched in my room from all the smoke. Boom computer shuts down and will not turn on.So I do the whole paper clip to power supply trick and nope the power supply is fine. Everything else worked but when I plug the PSU into the mobo.....NOTHING. Well I cooked....FRIED my mobo. Come to find out the manual for the XfX 780i board has a misprint in it for the HD Audio slot of the board. So I ended up plugging it into just raw power and when I plugged my headphones into the jack on my case it completed the circuit and melted my wiring harness and fried my board. Meh I LOL at it after being pissed for a few min and went to an un named store and bought the same board replaced the fried one and returned the fried one back to them for a full refund. Funny part is they didnt even think it had been opened. All in all my room still smells like burning rubber....

Hmm, love your stories guys!!! I haven't fried any mobos yet but I did fry my ATI HDTV Theater 650 PCI tuner. While overclocking my quad on Striker Extreme I ran into bsod and couldn't turn the pc back on. So while the rig was in the upright position I unplugged the PSU and managed to remove the battery to clear CMOS. After about 5 minutes I inserted the battery back into it's place and plugged the power cable back into PSU. CMOS cleared and I got back into BIOS no problem. about 2 minutes into overclocking I heard a dull pop and a lot of sparks flying our of my machine. It shut down itself but sparks continued flying in my face. As soon as I unpluged the machine I went in to investigate *** just happened and sure enough I found the stupid button cell battery welded onto my TV tuner. Lesson learned, push that battery hard when re-inserting it... $130 to waste. To my surpize mobo survived!! ASUS really makes rock solid products. Once I sat down on it with heatsink installed (I weigh 240lbs), I heard cracking noise but it still works like a charm

wow i dont even know were to start but one time we working on a media pc for class and we got it all working and we go to set tit up right and a pice of metal that was part of the case fell off and shorted the mobo. And this one time wich i will be posting pict of later we were modding the cooling solution to a passive cpu cooler and decided to hook up the power to the 12v lane instead of the 5v and well fried it.

the motherboard was fused to the rear panel it looked really cool. looking back i realized that it wasnt the computers fault "should have killed the HDD O.O

I fried a Gigabyte 780G mobo a few months back. Wasn't even overclocked, same components/clocks as my sig rig. It was running stock for about 4 months then...boom!

My dad owns an on-site computer repair business. I remember once he brought a computer home that had been refusing to turn on and he didn't have the time to repair it at the location.
Comes in, puts it on his workbench and proceeds to start opening it up, etc. Soon, the reason it wasn't starting was quite apparent. The motherboard was fried. It seems that a mouse decided to use the Motherboard as a urinal. There was the nice crispy little fella (frozen in position, no less), and an obvious liquid damage spot on the motherboard. Poor little guy... took electricity in the out hole. What a way to go.

swisha, it's sweet though when you refuse to take life's crap and just destroy said item for not complying.

Chances are you didn't hit it with static electricity as much as cross 2 traces with your finger causing the mobo to self short. That's why you dont touch the computer at all when its on!
