fried a 1.2 emachine celeron unit. Lesson: dont expect a power LED to act in place fo a power switch. the board turned on, the fans ran at full speed for 3-4 seconds, then shut down. refused to start up ever again. I figured I had blown a relay in the PS, tested another power supply, nope. apparently startup voltage is high enough to kill if it lasts more then a few seconds

so... I ran open case for a long time and my power button was a butter knife to touch the two power connecters for the pwoer switch. Well one day i couldn't find it but there was this niffty flat head screw driver on my desk and i touched it and it didn't work. So then i touched it back and forth kind of fast and it shot about 2 foot sparks in the air like a huge sparkler

I got my brand (then) brand new AMD Athlon XP 1600+ (I think) CPU delivered after returning home from school one summer afternoon, went straight up to my room and mounted the beast!
Ran like a bullet for approximately 25 seconds before shutting down with a sweet burnt smell... ...my tip would be, always remember to install the heatsink before turning on the computer..! S.

I never fried a whole PC, mostly just pieces of...
I was given an old IDE CDROM to replace my 2x panasonic drive. If you know much about old school PCs, panasonic drives used a special inferface card. So I was pumped to free up some space in the PC...actually it's my sig rig. The only catch was the CDROM needed cleaning. So I opened it all up and cleaned it with qtips and alcohol. I was too excited to test it out that I just flipped it over and tossed a cd in. Fire it up, and let the smoke out. The bottom PCB was touching my chassis.....crap. I was dicking around once with my Tbird 1.4ghz. I had a old dryer hose, I tossed it out the window and put the other end over my volcano 9. It lopped to one side and crushed the die.....crap. |

Reading this thread is unnerving!!
My story doesn't leave my PC in a fried state but still bad. I was at a LAN party with some mates and I'd just got this... I thought it was a fantastic new case. It had a 200mm fan in the top as an exhaust. Everyone was watching me turn on my nice rig and as I did, there was this god aweful noise so I franticaly hit the power and reset button until it turned off. Opened the case and fiddled around while everyone was watching but everything seemed to look ok so I powered it up again. The noise started straight away. I eventually figured it was the quite cheap looking top fan spinning crooked and hitting the plastic in the top of the case. Very embarrasing but it has got me to build my new PC as solid as I can!
