Default A Plasti-Dip experiment VIDEO ADDED

Hypothesis: I think Plasti Dip could be used to easily sleeve fan wires, motherboard headers, etc.

This may work great, this may not work at all. It may work but just look like crap. I am going to get a can of the actual dip and a can of the spray Plasti-dip. I am then going to sleeve some wires with it. Of course it will be on old junk parts and connectors at first. The purpose is to see how the rubberized coating will bond with the insulation of the wires of various electrical components.

Discuss.

Sounds like a fantastic idea. I think you'll probably have more luck with dipping version than the spray-on, just because it will be hard to spray evenly all the way around a wire.

Many pics please. Also flex testing.

I'm sure it will work, but I don't know of the possibility of actually "sleeving" the wires together. It will most likely turn them black.

Totally worth a shot though and keep us updated! Definitely subbed

Well, with PSU cables, just use a zip tie every few inches to hold the cables together, tape up the ends (or remove if possible) and dip away. Same for fans.

I dont have any tools for removing connectors/headers/etc. They will be zip tied as mentioned and taped at the end. Which reminds me I need to get some little tiny zip ties because once I dip them, the larger square part of the zip tie will be visibly protruding out.

You can zip a section, dip, then remove the tie, and move on to the next one. Or dip the whole zipped bundle, then cut off the ties and touch up those portions.

I can see this working pretty well for small bundles, but for the larger ones, the flexibility will be severely limited if the wires can't move freely against one another (like with sleeving). Either way, it should be an interesting experiment.

tip:

roughen up the plastic coating on the wires a bit. I recommend some 320grit sandpaper. It doesnt need to be thinned out, just to have its shiny and over-protective coating removed. Once you are into the raw rubber/plastic, the bond will be almost native, and much stronger.

So before reading this thread again, while I was gone, I ran to Home Depot and got a jar and a spray can of PD. Did not get any sandpaper nor do I have any here. I will see what I can figure out to roughen the rubber up a bit.

Going to attempt my first ever video and see if i can figure out how to eembed it. Worse to worse, the experiment will fail and I am out $12. So what.

Let me gather materials and I will return shortly hopefully some video and if not, pics for sure.

If I do that, won't one end be super thick and one end not so thick? How will I maintain consistency?
