Default Yamaha HTR-5740 cooling mod

I've been in need of a new receiver and I recently found a killer deal on Ebay, so I jumped on it. I was looking for something newer, but this will have to do. The receiver runs hot after awhile and I've always wanted to do put some fans in the receiver to keep it cool but never knew how. I was always stuck with putting a small fan on top of the receiver.

My plan for this short "mod" is to repaint the top panel, as it arrived with some pretty beefy scratches around the edges, cut two 120mm holes in the top, mod in a fan controller, and install one white cathode. Powering these will be a Pico PSU also modded into the back for an easy plug-in.

I will be getting the x2 120mm chrome fan grill from MNPC Tech on Tuesday, the fans and the fan controller on monday and I already have the white cathode. The mod won't be done for a few weeks as I won't be able to order the Pico PSU until a maximum of 3 weeks, (Hopefully sooner).

Now a couple questions... I can run everything off the Pico PSU with cable adapters and splitters to create more molex's, but does anyone know how to rig or if there's a switch I can buy that will short out the pins like how you would jump a PSU to start up the Pico PSU? I just need a way to start up the PSU without opening the case every time and sticking a paper clip in there.

Here's the links to everything I bought.

Sorry for the lack of pictures, I'm getting ready to head out and just wanted to throw this up. This is how the Receiver sits now... I also installed my HAF932's case feet and replaced the old big black ones.

And don't mind the stray screw coming out, I couldn't get it to go back in with just my hand and tiny screw driver, but I'll fix it before the whole thing is done, with a powered screwdriver...

I need a new camera...

I'm also considering getting the top panel powdercoated, but I'm afraid it will look too flashy. If however I did get it powdercoated, what color should I do, or should I keep it black?

Just jump the motherboard connector the same way you would do it with a regular PSU except solder a momentary vandal-resistant switch to the leads.

You can then mount the switch anywhere

Alright, thanks. I'll figure it out when the time comes.
In the meantime, I received my packages today and started to drill into the receiver when I got home. Sadly, my hole saw and the stock grill on the receiver's top don't play well together and I ended up with a ton of bent and mangled metal bits... Same goes with the fan controller holes. Also, the MNPCtech grill I bought is too shiny for me. I'm regretting that I bought the chrome edition, It seems too "bling" to me. So far this isn't going that well.

Here are some pictures...

As well as my sister's new ultra-cheapo build.

Nothing looks wrong to me. But a question for you..Did you use the drill bit that goes into the arbor of the holesaw? it is imperative to use the drill bit that secures with a set screw otherwise the hole saw will dance everywhere and **** everything up

It's not that it danced around, the pre-cut slots were dragged and bent when the hole saw passed through them. If that's clear enough to understand. The grill covers most of the bits up although you can still see some ugly peices under if you look closely. I have it running on a jumpstarted PSU in these few pictures, and this is how it will run until I get a Pico PSU installed in it. Hopefully 2 weeks maximum, when I get some dough. Thanks for the comments.

Also, the bend in the back from the fan controller will be fixed.. I installed it ~2cm off and I just need to grind it down a few mm's, because there's a heatsink under it and there's not enough room.

Haha, well it's even brighter now. I threw in the cold cathode just to see how it looks, and it's not too bad in the dark. Kinda starting to like it.

On a different note, I'm totally stoked about getting my first car. As long as I perform well in school this year, when the year is over.. right when I lose my permit and get my drivers license, I'm getting a 2006/07/08 S281 S/C Mustang Saleen.

I just now noticed how blurry the first few pictures are..
Pardon my lack of picture-taking skills.
