Default G9 peeling? Paint it! [lots of pics]

(Note: you don't have to follow this guide, but the most it will set you back is $5.00 + shipping for a new grip at the Logitech Store. This is intended for those who already have a f'ed up grip)

After owning the G9 mouse for 3 weeks, I scratched off some food stuck to the side of it, and more came off the mouse than I wanted. Shocked by this, I read online that is is a common problem, and you can request a new one for free. There were mixed reviews, some got new grips, some didn't. I, not wanting to mess with that did the following.

Picture of f'ed up mouse grip after 3 weeks use:

Another one:

The first thing I did was put it in a bag of Gasoline to remove the rest of the "non-slip rubber" stuff. Kerosene or Lighter fluid should work just as good, or better (procpuarie's recommendation). Do this outside!:

I now realize that that much gasoline isn't needed, and it only needs to be in there for 10-20 seconds at most. The rubber separates from the grip easily. The only downside is that for me the bottom "glider" came off while in the bag too, I will cover how to manage that later (at the end of guide if this happens to you). Knowing this, you may want to try brushing on the liquid of choice, and try avoiding the glider area, but it was easy enough to put back on so whatever you decide to do is OK.

After you have all the rubbery stuff off your grip, head over to a sink and wash it with some soap, warm water, or whatever you want. I used laundry detergent, baking soda, and water and let it sit there for 30 minutes. There is no need to make your mouse smell good though, just try to remove as much gasoline as you can. After you are done "cleaning" it, hang it somewhere to dry:

Some color alterations occurred on mine, and it may occur on yours too, its like a light gray with splotches of darker gray. It does not matter! Spray paint will cover this nicely for us:

Spray paint I will be using is one made for plastics (Krylon Brand). This is needed because others may chip off after some use:

Before we begin spray painting, some areas need to be covered. Get any thin cardboard box, like ones oatmeal is in, and rip off a piece of it:

and wedge it into the Button 4 / 5 section like so:

It will cover them so they wont get spray painted:

Then gather a wad of paper towels and shove them under the mouse and compact them so they fill the inside of the mouse. Feel free to use blue masking tape, but I ran out so I improvised. It worked quite nicely:

Place the mouse grip, now all prepped, in a well ventilated, and preferably sunny area. Note what surface you are working on, is it something you care about?:

Begin spray painting the grip at this time, for more information on how to do that, view this page (random Google page on spray painting). Basically go from left to right with the can, don't sit in one spot and spray. I would also recommend to apply several thin coats:

Take breaks every so often, to let the paint and yourself dry out (its hot in Florida):

Keep going, applying thin coats till your finished. You can see my paint is a bit rough, but its because the paint I am using is old. Will cover how to fix this later at the end. Picture of finished paint job:

Let it dry in the sun for 3 hours, rotating it every so often if the sun does not hit all the sides (though, not necessary, should dry OK). I let mine dry for 5 hours before I touched it, but its up to you. (Sorry, no picture for the drying process, should of taken a video)

Remove the paper towels, and cardboard, and you now have your sexy grip painted to your custom color. I could not wait any longer so I put it on my mouse ASAP. If you would like to do more to your mouse, make it smoother, etc. scroll to the bottom of this post. I kind of like mine a bit rough, gives it some texture, but I think I may sand it down so I can add in another picture below

[[Picture(s) of finished product]]

-No sanding (though still smooth enough for my use):

-different view

-different view (yea keyboard needs cleaning)

*more to come later once I sand mine a bit, and clear coat it*

*If you glider came off (as mine did)*
Logitech just uses glue on the bottom of their gliders to keep them on. If yours fell on while removing the rest of the rubber, wash the glider lightly (to remove the gasoline) and allow it to dry out for at least 30 minutes. After that, it should be sticky again, and you should be able to re-apply it to the bottom of your grip once you are done painting it. If for some reason it does not become sticky again, apply a small, thin amount of glue, and re-attach it to the bottom. They use glue, why can't you too!

*Other steps you can follow for further smoothness*
  1. Lightly sand it down with 800 grit paper, this requires a bit thicker coat, but not much.
  2. I would recommend to use a clear coat after step #1 because it wont be "smooth" anymore (unless you like it how it is). Just put on 1-3 layers of it and don't touch it for a day I would say (or 3 hours if you cant wait).
  3. For those that want MORE smoothness after the clear coat, all Ive got to say is keep lightly sanding it with finer and finer sandpaper until 2000 grit, and then just buff it with your hand as you use it everyday in gaming, power pointin' etc. You may also want to use a product for the buffing, but I don't know of any! (feel free to tell me in a post)

Nice work! I have a Logitech mouse (not a G9 though) that got a little dinged up over the years. Maybe I'll take it apart again and make a proper project out of redoing it in a new color.
