Default [Mini Project] HDD Speakers - In Stereo! - **UPDATE 14/08/09** Now with video!

Hey guys!

Well i am on holiday for way tooooo long in Devon in the UK and i want to MOD SOMETHING! So i was looking on the internet today (as you do) and stumbled across hard drive speakers! Look it up on youtube, it looks so cool! However i noticed none of them were mounted up nicely and they were generally just 1-offs. So i am going to make my own!

First off, the components:

2x 20gb IDE HDDs
1x 10w Stereo Amplifier Kit
1x 12v PSU
1x 12v psu socket
1x Optx Sound Activated CCFL Neon Blue (HIGHLY necessary!)
1x Dual Potentiometer
1x Badass Volume Knob!
3x Dual Speaker Cable
1x Heatshrink
3x Light Blue Tinted 5mm Acrylic A4
1x 3.5mm stereo jack socket
1x 8-in-1 torx screwdriver

So yeh... budget build! I plan to make a very simple acrylic box using my basic tools i have with me - drill, soldering iron, glue gun, super glue, hacksaw, B&D mouse sander etc. I will solder up the amp, solder up the hdds, drill some sound holes in the top of the box, drill holes for the jack socket, power socket and volume control, install the ccfl, wire it all up and glue it shut! rave! anyone for some ghetto modding?!

I plan to buy all the bits tomorrow, get them all within 5 days and be done within a week and a bit!

Current Progress

Log

#1 - Ordered the components + first Sketchup Renders
#2 - Started making the case
#3 - More case work
#4 - Got the hdd speakers working!
#5 - More case work + wiring. Got the top attached
#6 - Finished! Final pictures here

Easy... just make sure the knob you use has 11 ticks. If the labeled one has 10, by all means, get the unlabeled and label it yourself.

Ok so i just ordered all the components, around £65 in total (yes a little more than planned!). I got a few extras like some glue, switch, resistors etc. I found a cheaper old hard drive so im getting one of the 20gb and a 4.3gb one.

I just finished doing a sketchup render of what it will be like. I'm pretty pleased with it! Took me all of half an hour...

On the front is the volume control + input jack, on the back is the power input.

You can see in the back: the amp circuit, ccfl and ccfl inverter. I havn't got the switch in the render, i added that to my after i made the model. This will be on the front and is illuminated. There isn't actually mesh over the hard drives, i plan to drill some holes in it. not sure how good this will look, but it's meant to be ghetto anyway!

No comments on the renders?

I just got a delivery from maplins. When i ordered it, i forgot something (2 flashing blue LEDs) so i instantly sent them a message asking for it to be added on. Got the email yesterday saying it had been dispatched WITHOUT those LEDs even though i had given at least 24hours warning. I sent another email. I still havn't had a reply to those queries and my parcel just arrived. So i called up Maplins and said what is going on and they said 'o we can't change orders'. What a load of rubbish! So i said can i order them separately and now they want to charge me £3 postage for 2 3mm LEDs! What is this world coming to!

I will get some pics of the stuff that has arrived as soon as i find the dam camera.
