I opened a usb cable, and I found this
![]() I can't take a picture now, so my awesome mspaint skills will have to do. I see a white wire, a green wire, a yellow wire, a bare wire, and a red wire. I need to splice this with a fan that has only a red and black wire (+5v and ground, I think). Can someone tell me how I can make this work?

Apparently the yellow one is +12v, and the green and white ones are for data (I'm pretty sure fans don't need to transfer data
) Does that mean the unshielded one is ground? There's no black one.

there is no +12v in a USB, only +5v. red is +5 and the unshielded is ground. All others are data.

Are you sure the unshielded one is ground? What's the worst that could happen if it isn't and it's connected to the ground wire of the fan? And another thing, since the fan has a red wire instead of a yellow one, does that mean it runs on 5v instead of 12? If so, that's perfect, because I don't want the fan to draw more than 5v; that's all usb can provide iirc

The unshielded wire is ground. Many multiple-wire cables do this.

The ground is bare incase something cuts into the cable, instead of just shorting it you have a good chance of it grounding out instead

Just connect the red and black to the fan. It works. I've done it many times.
By black I mean ground.
