I recently purchased a linksys WRT310N router and it wasn't working quite as well as I hoped and found after a quick google hit that it tends to over heat.
This was my first attempt at cooling the router. First try. Then I decided to make something a wee bit more visually appealing. ![]() This is what it started as. Then to this ![]() Then finally to this.

Here's a brief work log of how I did it.
Materials:
Tools:
I got a case at fry's that was large enough to fit my router and 80mm fans. http://www.frys.com/product/1656697?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG I taped the parts I was going to cut up ![]() Finished cuts of the fan holes *I also finished cutting out the hole for the connectors in the back and the case window.* -not shown- ![]() I needed help with putting external antennas on so I asked getllamasfast for help. I was going to need external antennas and I decided to use RP-SMA connectors as that is the most common antenna connector. ![]() getllamasfast desoldered the internal antennas that were on the router ![]() Then he cut, stripped, and soldered my rp-sma cables onto the pcb ![]() Here's a pic of the router's pcb with the antenna cables attached ![]() After this was done, I just primed and painted the case ![]() Here's a picture of the window I'm going to put in ![]() Case window put in ![]() Fans and grills put on with the antenna connectors put into the case ![]() For the fans, I took the pins out of the molex connectors, taped them together, and cut the unneeded cables ![]() ![]() And then after I put the fans in, I realized they won't fit internally with the new heatsinks I put on the router so I ended up externally mounting them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ~the end~

I love it.
The only improvements I can think of would be to use just one fan mounted inside the case and wired internally. Your wallwart is capable of either 1A or 2A @12v depending on the version router you got. either would be more than enough to power an exhaust fan and your router. I'm sure that thing runs perfectly now!!!
