Hi, I guess I should explain my idea before I ask my question. I have an old laptop lcd just laying around and it has a ribbon connector that plugged into the mother board of an old laptop I got rid of.

I also have an old vga cable laying around. I was wondering if anyone has any idea how I can splice the laptops ribbon cable into the vga cable and get a picture. I'll have pics of the wires in an hour or so....

I think you need some kind of LCD controller to use a laptop screen.

Ok here it is. The LCD ribbon cable has a lot of small wires. Can anyone tell me what that box does? I'm guessing it is for the back lights so I might have to splice that into a molex connector...

That sucks. I was hoping to be able to just splice it in and ready to go. Thanks.

If you really want to play around with LCDs, check out the PSone screen. Lots of mods for that.

You cannot directly connect a laptop LCD panel to a desktop graphics card; the panel needs a controller. It is possible to buy VGA or DVI to LVDS (LCD panel's interface) controllers, but the price is more expensive than a new LCD monitor. From a cost standpoint, you'd be best off to simply buy an LCD monitor and strip the guts out of it and mod that into your case.
