Just a simple mod I did for a friend. Added a 70mm fan on top of the router to help cool it. Tried to fit the fan inside but it wouldn't fit due to clearance with the ports on the back.
What I had to work with ![]() The fan ![]() Used the closest size hole saw I had. This way allows for more air to enter easier. Also had to drill out 4 of the holes a little bit bigger to allow the machine screws to fit through. Also added a small heatsink to the Broadcom chip but forgot to take a picture of it. ![]() Finished and assembled. Doesn't look half bad in my opinion. Provides plenty of airflow.

Well, being that routers run hot and have a crappy lifespan, I think that is a very smart mod. Good job.

lol all I have on hand is a 15inch cold cathode. Wouldn't exactly fit. My friend was just mainly looking for performance boosts and didn't care much about the aesthetics anyways.

looks good.
__________________Where does the fan get power from on the board? Straight from the DC in? Is the fan exhaust or intake? My WRT54G gets pretty warm and this mod might be worth doing. I actually just cleaned up a 50mm fan today and I was wondering what I could use it for... it might be small enough to fit inside...

Yo man that's pretty cool!

I did this exact same mod to my router (WRT54G)except I used an 80mm fan and installed it the other way to exhaust heat. Also installed the DD-WRT firmware (which I love BTW) and OC'ed the thing.. still running strong for 8 months or so. Also in our house (2 stories) we get at least 90% signal now (compared to 30% before OC) anywhere and even 50% outside.
