Go with an iron. A gun is really too big for electronics type work.

I'm fond of the 15/30 watt selectable iron that Radio Shack has. At 15 watts, it's perfect for fine soldering, and at 30W it's perfect for soldering large contacts and desoldering things.

I think I got mine for like $10-15 back in the day. I'll see if I can find a link. Get some desoldering braid to clean up your screw ups.

Edit: Also might want to pick up a small blank PCB. You can practice on that. And just do it in a somewhat ventilated area. I don't like the fumes.

I always go for whatever solder iron is cheapest. :-) they are all about the same.

the only other stuff you need is solder.

it can be nice to have some solder wick to soke up old solder or excess, but it is not required. also, if you are doing wire to wire stuff then it helps to have one of those things with the two clips to hold things in place. :-)

good luck.

bt, what are you soldering?

I'm thinking about starting off with wiring LEDs in series/parallel and then moving on to the CMOY altoids amplifier. Im pretty much up for any beginner projects.

I heard the Fiio E5 is a better amp and its cheaper and smaller, not to deter you from your project. Just sayin'

Here is a nice one. Its simple, and has a cleaner. Got to keep that tip clean. http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2062750
Some desoldering tools, cleaner, alligator clips (heat sinks), and good solder.

the reviews weren't that great for it, since there aren't replacement tips available. do you guys know if weller would be the way to go or just a super cheap one?
