Default LED strobe to music

How would I go about doing this?

Input from a iPod, and then into the X230 that I put into a small cube enclosure.

I'm hoping to do this without buying any chips or anything, but we'll se! ;D

The easiest way would be to use a bridge rectifier (AC->DC current) and hook them up to your speakers' leads through that.

Oh, Is the power going to the speakers AC? No wonder I couldn't get a voltage reading! haha.

Is there a specific one you could recommend? (I'm sure you'll need to get me to get the AC reading)

I'll be using 3.5v LEDs.

I saw a video on exactly how to do this on youtube. The guy made some *****in speaker base stand type things out of some old blank cd spindles . Looked really cool.

*looks for some old spindles and that video again*

Yeah the current has to go one way to push the speaker outwards, and then the opposite way to go back in! Think of a graph of a sound wave, where y=distance of speaker cone from rest position. The only way to get a speaker to respond like that is with an alternating current.

And it doesn't matter which one you get, just as long as you can find the max voltage across the speaker and it can handle the power of the LEDs (which isn't much).

So, To find the max voltage, Just crank it up, and read it?

Then, I just put it in line with the speaker wire?

Amp -> Wire (+/-) -> rectifier -> LED-> wire -> Speaker?

Not quite. Read this.

The rectifier has 4 connections - two for the AC circuit, and two for the resulting DC circuit. So it has to be hooked up in parallel to the speaker.

But directly installing it in parallel with the speaker will burn the amplifier. Standard amplifiers can't handle an impedence of less than 1ohm on the output, and ones that go even that low are pretty expensive. You need to find the impedence of your speaker and the lowest impedence the amp can handle, and build a circuit designed to keep it working. Generally speaking, if your speaker is 8ohm, but your amp can handle going down to 4ohm, then you're going to want your LED circuit (including the bridge rectifier) to be 8ohms as well (1/I = 1/I1 + 1/I2....).

If you don't know much about circuits you're getting in over your head here.

Yeah.. this is extremely complicated for me. :P

I'll probably just mod one of these:

Thanks for the help.

I'm so used to DC, Cause I can always tinker something in to make it work! haha.

Just remember that the power coming out of that for the CCFL is AC as well!
