Default Bittorrent Guide

LEGAL BLURB:

The information supplied in this guide is to be used for legal actions only.
Any illegal action taken by an Overclock.net forum member is his own risk and Overclock.net is not responsible for any legal action taken against you for your actions.
Please do not post links or ask where to obtain illegal torrent files.

THE GUIDE:

To use Bittorrent your going to need a client I prefer to use a client called Azureus and it’s the client I will be using to cover this BT guide. Don’t worry if you use a different client because the steps are still the same to getting BT up and running.
If you have a direct connection to the internet from your PC then all you will need to do is make sure Azureus.exe and Javaw.exe have full access to the internet and configure the port Azureus uses. See Step 1.

If you are connected to the internet via a router then you need to configure Azureus and your router aswell. See Step 1 & 2.

Step 1:Load up Azureus and you will be presented with the screen below. If the configuration screen does not appear click Tools – Configuration Wizard.

Click next to proceed to the first configuration window.

Here you will tell Azureus your internet connection speed or you can choose custom and input your own value for upload speed. Remember your download speed is somewhat dependent on your upload speed so don’t set this too low.

Once you have set that click next to proceed to setting the port Azureus will use to communicate via.

It will have a default value of 6881, do not leave this as the port sicne most ISPs have now blocked this port or BT trackers have and will ban you for 48hrs or more. I have mine set at 55055. Its recommended to use a number between 40000 and 60000 since most other programs don’t use this high a port range.

If you are only behined a firewall you can now test the port you have chosen, you should get the Ok!, but if you don’t try another port number.

Step 2: If you have a router like I do since I am on a wireless network then you need to setup the router for port forwarding.

(Depending on your router this step may vary in where you forward port)

Open your router configuration settings and go to services to select which ports the router will allow Azureus to use.

Setup so Azureus can access the port you set in Step 1: its best to set a range so I have set mine to 55055 to 55066 also select TCP/UDP.

Save those settings and choose Firewall Rules, here we will tell the router which IP to have the port forwarded to.

So type in your PCs IP which will usually be 192.168.X.X and allow it to always access the internet. Do this for Upload and Download.

Save these settings and start downloading using Bittorrent.

Legal Bittorrent Site:

Filesoup -Offers open-source software and freeware, music from artists whose labels don't belong to the Recording Industry Association of America trade group, and programs from public television stations like PBS or the BBC.

Etree - Is for devotees of "trade-friendly" bands like Phish and the Dead, who encourage fans to share live recordings, usually in the form of large files that have been minimally compressed to maintain sound quality.

Legal Torrents - Wide selection of electronic music. It also has the Wired Magazine Creative Commons CD, which has songs from artists like the Beastie Boys who agreed to release some of their songs under a more permissive copyright that allows free distribution and remixing.

Deadlock did a pretty good job of covering "how to open up ports", but every router is different. Basically you need to enter your router's GUI (for linksys routers, you simply need to open your web browser and enter '192.168.1.1' as your URL; the default login and password are both 'admin'), and forward the ports you are using for BT. To add to Deadlock's guide, I have found that the more ports you have open, the merrier. He shows a total of 11 ports opened, and even with just one torrent file, this may be insufficient. If you have 7 peers from which you are downloading and 8 peers that are uploading from you, then you have already exceeded those 11 ports, and your p2p capabilities have been limited. I just recently figured this out for myself, and I would recommend opening up at least 200-300 ports. You need to open the ports through your router, then establish the starting port in Azureus (or BT client of your choice). If you are behind a firewall, you will most likely want to manually establish the open ports in your firewall, as well. You will also want to make sure both TCP and UDP protocols are allowed for these ports, if the option is presented in your router and/or firewall.

Cheers

Nice addon... Your right about the ports and connections to peers... I have mine set low because I generaly only use BT for small downloads that I cant get on USENET. I should have mentioned more ports more likey to connect to more peers with decent speeds.

I will encorporate this into the Answer section since I have now moved it all over there.

Inspire: A NAT error means you need to open the port you have selected.
Can you tell us your setup... Are you behined a router or do you have a firewall setup that blocks ports. Norton has a firewall that blocks ports and you need to configure them.

Let us know of we will get you started.

^Feel free to incorporate any of the info I just added, if you want, DL.

Inspire, Azureus (and any BT client) starts a connection in the first port that has been assigned/configured, then assigns a new port for each new peer/connection. So, in the example above (7 peers downloading, 8 peers uploading), you would need 15 ports avialable, to be "getting the most" out of BT. Me personally, I have anywhere from 3 to 10+ torrents going at a time, so I need all the ports I can get.

Zonealarm you can just give access to Azureus... Im not sure how Zonealarm works but if its like most others it pops up a popup and says Azureus is trying to connect to the internet... This should be allowed.

Now your router you need to open the configuration tool... The easiest way if you dont know the routers IP is to get the routers driver CD and stick it in the PC... This will load up the configuaration tool. If you do know the IP type it in the address bar in IE. Password is usually always Admin and password should be password.

I found this guide for your router well I hope its your router.

BT Voyager Router

If this step by step guide gets confusing ask away.

Can we get this stickied?
Azureus runs extremely well, its what I use at school to get my anime.

I know you can get a good supply of Fansubbed Anime that hasn't been liscensed yet from http://animesuki.com/

I just list that site because it keeps a good updated list of series that will probably never make it out of Japan, and takes down any series that gets liscensed to avoid lawsuits.

Also be kind to others, keep your Bittorent program running so you seed files for other people to download. Thats the way P2P works.
