Everyone talks about how they rip DVD's into AVI to back them up (legally of course, not talking about breaking encryption). The question is, what is the point of that backup? Is it only to be played on your computer and never again on DVD? Is there a way to convert an AVI movie back to DVD without losing so much quality? I'm willing to pay for software if it gets me good quality. I've used WinAVI and ImToo AVI/DVD converter but they either put the DVD into invalid files for burning or the quality is bad. Is there no way to get DVD quality from an AVI?

If you have an AVI on your PC and you want to burn it back to a DVD pretty much and burning program will do that for you...nero for example.

Yes but quality are we talking here? Won't it be distorted when I watch it on a DVD player?

Dvd2Svcd
or The Film Machine for avi to dvd...................... I've just started using TFM, There is a pdf guide if you click the How To Use link. It suggests you grab CCE and SurCode DTS Encoder from a torrent site, you don't need them so I wouldn't bother. You can use a trial of CCE but it leaves a pretty big and quite vulgar watermark on the (fantastically) encoded video. Just use HCEnc ( it produces pretty damned good results) and Aften for the AC3 encoder. Or Dvd Rebuilder For Dvd to Dvd backups. You can use CCE or HCEnc, As above I would just use HCEnc.
