Hi all. I have lurked here for a while but this is my first time posting. I was wondering the best solution for playing blue-ray files. I have a .mkv file that when playing on VLC or Media Player Classic It will play fine but then eventualy lock up my whole computer forcing me to restart manually.

CCCP --> BEST
Basically if VLC and CCCP can't play it, it can't be played at all.

well that didnt work. Its hard for me to belive a bad file is causing my computer to freeze but i guess its possible right? It plays for a random amount of time then the screen goes black but i can here the movie playing still.

nope no overclocking at all. i used to over clock my video card but its still a stock right now.

Try Media Player Classic with CoreAVC (also coreavc installs Haali media Splitter for MKV's)

Edit:
If you don't wan't to pay for Core AVC (or get it by other means) then you can just install ffdshow and Haali Media Splitter.

Where did you get the .mkv file from? (torrenting maybe? if so, thats your problem)
Did you rip/encode it yourself?

no. that is what im starting to think is the problem.

tried another file and worked for a good 20mins and then i got a bsod.

That's not the problem, and yo shouldn't come in saying stuff like this unless the OP post has made it obvious it's a pirated file.

OP: Install CCCP, and then go to Start -> All Programs -> Combined Community Codec Pack -> Settings, and at the second option window (after you press Next on the first), tick both Reset All Settings and Re-Register Filters.
