Default How do I open this file?

MUD28.9.dir

This, I believe, is the build of a game. It opens with adobe director. The problem is that the file is protected. The error message that I get when attempting to open is "File C:\Documents and Settings\xxx\My Documents\MUD28.9.dir is protect and cannot be opened."

Info about the game: It is a graphical mud.. Developed to use adobe flash. I'd like to get as much info as I can on how I can actually use this file.

Ensure you have admin control and that the game is shut down.

Admin control over the program? The game is certainly shut down.. I haven't seen it running in years.

If you're trying to open it in Vista, then tell it to "Run as administrator". I had to do that once already, even though I am the administrator.

File extensions and what they mean:
- DIR: Director authoring file which can be opened and edited in Director Shockwave Studio. Must be opened in the same version of Director it was created, or a newer version.

Seems like you need Director Shockwave Studio.

Not necessarily. It says that it can be open and edited in Director Shockwave Studio, but then it says that it must be opened in the same version of Director that it was created in. It doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be Shockwave Studio.

I asumed they ment Director Shockwave Studio when they were talking about Director in the second sentence. Like, it can be opened and edited with program X, however you do need to have the correct version of X. However, I'm not that familiar at all with the Director product mentioned so I could just have easily been wrong

On topic though, it sounds a bit like - and correct me if I'm wrong, don't know if this is supported - some sort of option was selected when saving the file that prevents others from opening it. A bit like the 'Protect from import' function Flash offers.

I think that is the issue. There must be some way to open it even if this is the case, though. If the file was locked then say, for example, the host server crashes and for some reason they don't have any other machine to open it up.. how would someone?

I'll try to find this program, thank you.

EDIT: Found this at the site you linked to.
Protect
"Protect" removes all the data required to edit the movie, but it does not compress the movies further. It adds the DXR extension to movies, and CXT to casts. Protect also flags the movie so it can't be opened in the authoring environment. DXR files can be useful in a project that has a stub movie with external Director movies. More than one file can be protected at one time. Once a movie is protected, there is no way to recover it as an editable file, so be sure to keep the original DIR file. This feature can be useful when external Director movies will be distributed with a projector, but the movie data needs to be protected.
