I'm looking for an easy way to upload my 1680x1050 fraps videos on youtube.
The way I currently upload my vids is like this: 1) Record ingame footage using fraps. 2) Open virtualdub and compress using xvid codec. 3) Upload compressed file on youtube. Using this method, a 821mb video ends up being 39.8mb and looks great on my computer. But after uploading and processing on youtube, it looks pixelated and not the same compressed video that I have on my computer. My videos end up looking like this: How would I get quality like in this video? Last edited by dreameer111 : 08-03-09 at 03:31 PM |

Perhaps you should just record at 720p? Youtube probably has to scale it down to 720p anyway

__________________If you don't upload in a format as close to youtube's specs [ie. resolution] as possible they are going to have to transcode it on their servers, and I doubt they put too much emphasis on quality given the amount of processing they likely have to do in a day. If you want more bang for your youtube buck I would recommend transcoding the video to youtube HD standards on your PC before uploading it. Also, if you're using a lossy compression in your convesion to xvid you're probably going to lose even more quality when youtube transcodes it to their secret recipe as I doubt they are using a lossless compression.

Use Fraps to record at a specific resolution. Can't you do that?
Record directly at 1280x720, and do not convert it with a codec. You could record at your native resolution, but you need to compress it to something that is not so heavily compressed. Compressing a file that large to 38MB or so is going to cause all sorts of problems with YouTubes converting of the file.

Record @ 720P, since 1680x will just downscale.
Why do people still use xvid? It's old and outdated, x264 is much better. 40MB for a 20 second video is quite large. Obviously the video on youtube won't look the same. Firstly it's downscaled, and especially from a 1680x res to 720P, that REALLY looses alot of the readability (look at the text).

Yeah I change my res to 1280x768 (16:10 monitor) specifically to film for my You Tube videos If you up load a video near to 1080 they'll butcher it to death.

38mb for an hd file is far too large, something is wrong. And after youtube does their trickery, I'm not surprised it looks bad.
My first piece of advise would be to record at 720p from fraps and then encode it to mp4 using ripbot264 (without changing any resolution options)
