Default Stupid 32 bit question.

now i understand the advantages of a 64 bit OS over a 32 bit OS, the biggest one being the memory limit thing in 32 bit OS's.

My question is, is this limited to only the OS or does it also extend to 32 bit Programs?

I try to get or install all 64 bit software but there are somethings i always need to compromise on. but looking at my task manager, when i have several things running, i know should be eating large amounts of memory, none of the 32 bit programs seem to be "eating" up all that much memory, like with firefox, some times when i am working on several websites at once, i will have 4 or 5 instances of Firefox open, with up to 30 tabs opened on each on, but i don't see a single instance of FF using more than 800 or 1 gig of ram.

I know i have googled this before, but it only really returned results for the 32 bit OS limit, so i thought i'd ask here.

its not important, i am just more curious than anything.

My understanding is that all 32bit programs (much like windows) can only use a limited amount of memory, which i think is why things like IE can be in 32 and 64bit.

But i might be wrong

it makes sense, that a 32 bit program would have the same 32 bit registers and integer limitations that a 32 bit OS would have, it wouldn't make any sense if that wasn't true, then i'd wonder why 32 bit OS's would be limited to 4 gigs of total memory addresses...

i dabble in programming all the time, but most of it is web related, so i haven't gotten into the whole multi-threading/32-64 bit things.
