Ok, so i Just install the retail version of Windows 7 and reinstalled itunes. I keep all my music on a drive other than my c: drive. So this time it after i installed in it pulled my my main music folder, and it pulled up my music folder backup off my external drive. Unplugging the external drive just sends iTunes into a fit of errors when I try to play an album.

Plugin first your external HDD, then Choose File > Library > Organize Library and select the option to "Consolidate files".
This will copy all your media files and and set the reference to your itunes media folder (its Document's Music folder by default but you can change the location in itunes options) instead of your external.
