A bit is a single binary digit (a 0 or a 1) and a byte is a group of 8 of these bits.

bit x 8 = byte
byte / 8 = bit

1 byte = 8 bits
8 bits = 1 byte

Don't be so quick to judge! They do like to express in Mb which equals /8? Give the guy a break. Networking is the biggest joke.

8 bit = 1 byte
8 kbit = 1kb
8 mbit = 1mb
8 gbit = 1gb

Basically, anything ending with bit is 1/8 of it's byte counterpart.

Advertised speeds are almost always in bits/second because it looks better to unaware people. So if your DSL is advertising 126kb/s then you could download around 15kbytes/s, but if your getting 126kbytes/second downloading things, then you have roughly a 1mbit/s connection.

Byte is present tense, bit is past tense.
