Default Need a DVD burner/Converter Program

im looking for a free program that can burn .AVI to DVD and be readable by regular DVD players. I also want it to be able to rip DVDs to .AVI also.

it doesnt have to burn CDs or anything else, tho it is fine if it does. it also doesnt have to convert any other filetypes, but it could be useful if it did.

many people have posted similar threads, but they seem to have more requirements than i do. i just need something simple to burn/rip dvds.

thanks a lot, and sorry for being repetative

If you want free, then the best way to go about burning to DVD is DVDFlick.
http://www.dvdflick.net/

If you want to rip DVDs to AVIs, Handbrake (also free+open source) is excellent. It automates all of the intricacies and technicalities of ripping into a simple point-and-click process.

You want to rip a dvd and get the .iso file right? I use dvdfab for this. You get to keep everything, and even choose between 100%- 70% quality of the dvd.

i used handbrake, but it didnt do well at all.. maybe i messed something up

i really wanted .avi files. they are easier for me to use for playback on my computer or to burn to dvds to play on dvd players.

Have a look at Magic DVD Ripper.. costs money but it is worth it. There is a full functional free trial you can have a go at (limit 30days or something)
Basically put DVD, select output format (avi/wmv/lots of others), directory and press start.

To burn avi files to DVD's to be able to play in DVD players, I use windows DVD maker.. really simple to use and hasnt failed me yet. Im not sure if you can get it for Windows XP though

Your Handbrake issues are most likely due to user error. It's one of the most highly-regarded all-in-one apps in the video community...I use it all the time for my XViD and x264 rips.

dvdflick did really well, i burnt a 2nd dvd last night. its decent quality.

and handbrake is probably my fault.. im having trouble getting it to recognize the video_ts file. it says its reading the source but it just stays there. it says it could take up to a minute to read it, but it sits there for 5 mins and doesnt do anything.
