Yeah it should appear as an option in sony vegas after you install the encoder from microsoft. I used to make videos in a game about once a week and used WMV + vegas.

I did this with the 64 bit encoder and nothing new has appeared, WMV is there as usual but nothing else :/
I wish I knew my way round this, really quite new to video editing haha.

I believe the proper way to do this is to render the video uncompressed (uses a huge amount of space on your HD) from the video editing software then take the final product and compress it using some sort of software ... x264 is the way to go .... For comrpession software, I've use SUPER, Virtual Dub and MediaCoder... all good... GL

How would you render uncompressed? And what if I wanted to add a small title? :S

Encoded videos will ALWAYS look worse than their source footage. From what I've seen, if you use a proper codec and enough bitrate, this loss of "quality" is limited to color and lighting.

You can (sorta) see the difference between codecs & raw here:

You can see a better comparison (using lower bitrates) here:

Rendering uncompressed isn't really massive. I've had some 100GB files before (10+ minutes of 720P60), but nothing truly massive that would eat up most of my disc space. If you're worried about avilable space, you can try using a codec like huffyuv or largarth (or however you spell it).

If you want to do a high-quality rendering, use h.264 in a method I'm sure Coma will post about in the next day. Personally I just use megui and mux into a mp4 container with V0 audio.

If you just want to render out of Vegas without using any other programs, just use 720P WMV settings. Set up your rendering profile like this:

First tab:
Set quality to preview (this disables smart resampling)

Second tab:
Change audio bitrate to 128kbps without music, 256 (or higher) if you do.

Third tab:

Hey thanks for this, I tried the Vegas one with the Default Template and all the same settings as you and the grass etc still looks merged and low quality.
What's this megui? Good results?

By the way it only has to be 720p as the above guy said, not 1080p

In Sony Vegas, when you choose "Render As.." Choose the Sony AVC option in the drop-down box, and then choose the best option for which you want.

YouTube only shows up to 720P to my knowledge, so if you upload a 1080P video, it will be converted down I believe. Not positive though.

I prefer using my own custom-presets, but you can try the AVCHD 1080 option.

The best method I have, is the following which is one of my custom presets.

Use the Sony AVC option and then choose any preset, then go to custom.

For Video Rendering Quality, choose best.

Under the video option, choose this:

For Audio, just make it whatever you prefer.

This has given me fantastic quality.

Then save it as a preset and it should be great. In my opinion using the Sony AVC option is MUCH better than using the MPEG settings.

Edit, the settings quoted above are also great quality settings. Either one is great, but I have always used the options I've shown above.

.mp4.

That's the output file type when using the Sony AVC option. In my opinion it's better quality that using WMV or MPEG.

I'm not very informative when it comes to video quality, I just do what I saw a long time ago and it brings good results.

I sometimes make the Bitrate lower so that the file size is generally smaller if I don't want to take a long time to upload.

Also if your videos output dark, you can increase the brightness of the video by using the effects option on the video to the far right of the video in the timeline.
