I'm curious. Why was Itanium such a fail? I know like nothing about it, just that it was a server chip or something.

It emulated 32-bit programs, instead of being able to run them natively like x86-64 processors. The emulation was very expensive for Intel, which meant the chips are expensive for customers, and the emulation also made it slower than many other chips when running 32-bit programs. Also, writing software for it requires special compilers, which meant special compilers also had to be written.

Basically, it is full of fail.

It was a completely new architecture Intel developed with HP that was 64 bit only. It failed because at the time the majority of software ran x86(and still does) so no developer thought it was worth while to bother switching. It was also an attempt by Intel to completely shut AMD out of the microprocessor market, though AMD just developed x86_64 (a 64bit extension to the x86 architecture) which eventually Intel adopted (after they traded SSE3 with them i think?).

This was actually the genius of XP. The funny thing is so many people in the tech communty seemed to have forgotten just all the problems XP has. Windows XP SP2 did not just spring from Microsofts loins so to speak.

I love how he put that nutter Stallman on the list. I love the GNU project but Stallman is soooo conceited. Linus is too but at least he does it in a jovial fashion. They've both earned the right but it doesn't mean you need to take it. Fat people have the right to wear spandex, doesn't mean they should.

I don't mind Vista. It's not that bad. It did have some bad parts to it but a lot of the issue with Vista being bad was because clueless people heard it was bad and instantly deemed it unworthy. For example, mom's computer broke a few months back and rather than fix a single core, I suggested she get a new system. When I explained she'd probably have to go with Vista, she said, "No thanks!" She had a choice between Vista and Ubuntu. She got Vista and installed AOL on it. I love you mom, but you don't know what bad software is if you insist on installing AOL.

mp3s aren't bad either. Yes, they're lossy but to the average consumer, 192 bit rate and higher is more than enough. Hardcore audiophiles still have the choice of lossless flac. Without mp3s, we would never have had the iPod or any other portable media player like them. There just wasn't room. The first mp3 player I had held 512mb. How many flac files would that hold?
