Default Opening MKV wrapper on video file?

I need to play a video that is in an MKV wrapper and I don't know how to get it out. Does anybody know what I need in order to unwrap it?

mkv is a type of video file, its usually high def like bluray rips, over 720p that can hold a lot of subtitles and audio tracks within it, the best way to play them is with divx player (for best quality) or VLC media player for best performance

Hi 003,

Like tha d0ctor says, MKV is a video file and normally contains HD H.264 video. DivX Player does provide playback for free and when you install the DivX bundle it also includes free DirectShow filters that allow you to play such files in third-party players like Windows Media Player too. Our latest bundle includes the DivX MKV Tech Preview for Windows 7 which enables playback of MKV files under the new Microsoft Media Foundation framework, implying hardware-accelerated video decoding (on supported hardware), and the ability to stream your content to UPNP or Media Center Extender devices, e.g. the PS3 or XBox360.

We're using MKV/H.264/AAC for the DivX Plus format and you can find at labs.divx.com a beta version of the DivX Plus Web Player. This allows you to play such files over the web with a browser plug-in (most major browsers supported) - i.e. HD video, 5.1 surround sound, multilingual subtitles, embedded/windowed/fullscreen modes, and the ability to save the files once they're fully buffered. This all works with MKV files served from any standard HTTP 1.1 server.

VLC is a good player also and has support for a lot of different formats built in. With regard to MKV files, one issue I find it has with high-bitrate 1080p files is that it's not yet using a multithreaded H.264 decoder and this means all of the video decoding happens only on one CPU core. As long as your CPU can keep up that's okay, but sometimes it will fall behind and you'll get stuttering or some nasty blocking artifacts on screen.

Hope that helps

www.shark007.net

download the main package and then the x64 package AS WELL if your on a 64bit OS..... default settings after both installs will play a mkv via windows media player...

If you looking for upconverting sound or dolby digital audio your going to have start going into ac3filter or ffdshow audio settings...

My personal favorite set up with the Shark007.net codecs w/ AC3 filter for AC3 and DTS audio... and then Media Player Classic

I've installed the DivX 7 player and I can now play the mkv file, but it is without sound. Any ideas? Some kind of codec pack I need to install?

Use VLC or KMplayer to play it, I've been using those for 4 years now to play my anime MKVs. If you want to EXTRACT the MP4 out of it you can do it with MKVExtract. But you will need to extract sound sep so I just rec getting VLC or Kmplayer. Both are the same and don't need ANY codecs

@003: You might need to install an AC3 filter.

VLC player for a media player that can play it straight away, or any of the main codec packs (Sharky's, CCCP, K-Lite) will handle it.
