No offense intended whatsoever, but I'm VERY surprised there's absolutely NO mention of Adium for Mac. Any computer power user who has spent enough time with a Mac knows that when it comes to instant messaging on Mac... It's Adium or bust. Trillian doesn't even come close, honestly.. But it's far better than iChat.
Adium does not support IRC as of current, but X-Chat Aqua can fill that void (and quite well too). Also, due to legal battles with AOL, the developers of Gaim had to change the program's name to Pidgin.
