Default Why Powder Coating Is On Hold

Hey everyone, I wanted to type up a thread about why my powder coating is on hold. I know that I sorta lost it in Mortimers thread and I never should have done that. But, what's done is done right?

Well, for those of you that don't know, I had a major problem with the powder that I thought I had fixed. Turns out that I didn't. I have spent thousands trying to get this right and when Mortimers case didn't turn out right, I just lost it.

I have gotten a lot of PM's about this wondering why I stopped powder coating. My partner that wants to get into this (in another thread with me the teacher) want's to know if I really want to stop powder coating. The answer is no. But, I have to find out why this problem is happening. For those of you that don't know what is going on, here is a little pic of Mortimers case. Because it's a heavy metallic, then this happens, it happens bad.

Now, as you can see the metallic has seperated from the black, but for some reason, the black didn't get drawn away. This makes me want to discharge the idea of oil on the part. I clean all my parts with Iron Phosphate and I bake them to 250*F to clean off any oils that are on the part. This didn't work on the last case.

But, I realized something after I shipped his case to him. The doors are just about smooth as glass and I couldn't figure out why. Well, it hit me last night. I put the case in the oven at full temp (385*F). I think this caused the powder to flow out way too fast. When I put the doors in teh oven, I put them in at room temp. I had massive problems with the clear, but teh black chrome is just about flawless. So, I have some of Oblivions case here and I'm going to use that to test on. I also have some of Frozen_Q's end caps for his res here that are getting Black Chrome. So, I will give you all an update when I finish them.

So, it all boils down to this. I am not going to quit trying to powder coat, I just want to make sure that you guys are getting your money worth.

The owner of one of my suppliers has given me some tips that I'm going to try on some scrap. I also want any ideas that any of you may have. I'm willing to try anything to get this right cause I want to powder coat any of your cases.

I hope you all understand and will be patient while I figure this out. And, I'm sorry for going off the hook in the other thread. And, I have to say sorry to mortimer.

That is what I tried to do. I don't have the overhead of the big shops so I don't need to charge as mugh

Thanks Mega, I'm hoping that I get this figured out today. I have some tests that I'm going to do on 4 different powders and 4 different materials. We will just have to wait and see what happens.

Correction: Your wife does paint and powder stripping.

Good to see you're sticking to it.

How's the anodizing progressing?

Anodizing isn't going so well. I did a quick figure on how many amps I would need to anodize a case and I don't have anything that powerful adn can't afford it either. I'm still looking into the small scale anodizing and may pick up some things for that this week, but can't promise anything.
