Default Folding farm limping along.

I have dropped about 4K ppd since I trashed one of my quad systems. For the past week been limping along on one Quad and misc others. Luckily I should have the replacement motherboard this week. I also ordered another Q6600 tonight (Thanks Whodie and OCN for the custom case!!!!). I should be back up in the next 2 weeks with 3 quads + some misc single cores and hopefully posting about ~15Kppd. Hoping to add 3 more Quads by June to put me at my goal of 25Kppd. Then build a custom case to house 5 of them, which will be my sig folding rig.

Today was my official 1 month anniversary of my first WU and I have learned a lot along the way thanks to the great community you have here.

Most of my numerous years of computer experience was based on data crunching performance. I know way more than is healthy about RAID setups, network bandwidth, and system optimizing for apps like SQL Server and Web Servers.

I never realy got into overclocking until last month when I was trying to figure out why my workstation was running like mud and taking forever to compile. I dont get into games much anymore, but I do love computers, and folding has given me a reason to tinker again. Plus it is a hell of a lot cheaper and more fun than just dropping 20K on a new HP server for the office.

Our team is really competitive globally as it is now. Many of the top 10 teams do not boast their top 20 all above 1200 points per day. What we've been lacking is a true world class folder, though. If you can get up to 25k ppd, that would certainly fill that gap.

As quad cores continue to get more affordable, I hope more people embrace them thus helping our team to breeze past the competition. While there are some top teams about there that stay on the cutting edge as we do, I think many of our peers earned their positions based on sheer quantity of systems rather than quality.

I'm a little sad that you'll fly by me long before I can catch up to QMopar, but hopefully I still have time to reach second before you thump me.

Part of my goal is to be able to spec out a system that is designed specific to folding. I do believe that a rig can be built that cost less than 1K and can produce 4K+ ppd. Each system I am building is a bit different(beside the Q6600). I am tracking production based on different versions of Linux, Ram setups, motherboard, as well as overclocking specs. I am also trying different types of cooling as well. Within the next few months I will post my results. By Q3 when the prices for the Quads drop below $300, dedicated folding boxes for hard core folders should be very cheap to build.

It's rare that someone has the interest AND means to undertake such an ambitious venture. Best of luck with the project. Hopefully your project will yield some definitive results that will help our teammates in selecting gear for their new folding builds.

I think a $1k dedicated folding build is very attainable, especially with Linux being the apparent OS of choice for dedicated folders. Plummeting RAM prices have certainly helped matters greatly as have the recent CPU price cuts.

The "ultimate" folding rig has certainly changed over time. Two years back, a solid P4 system was the king of the hill. Around 4.0 GHz, they could crank out 500-600 ppd doing QMD cores. Once the QMDs dried up, AMDs took over. C2Ds changed the landscape dramatically followed by SMP, which has by far been the largest jump in performance. Now that quads are reasonably attainable (and even affordable in the not so distant future), things are changing again. The next generation of quads promise to be even better. Two years from now, we'll look back on our folding performance and laugh at our ppd/dollar investment.

I do know for sure how the Intel Quads run. My big question is if AMDs new quads will be a folding beasts or not. I wish they were available now so I could add one to my testing.
