I know you have to have a core monitor the GPU when using a GPU to fold ... but ... can you use a HT CPU so that you have one "core" monitor the GPU (which is folding), and then have the other "core" fold ... ? Would that work?

Turing Test is Overrated

HyperThread is just a single core emulating a second core with a good thread scheduler. There really is no second core. If you force affinity with HT, you are hurting performance since the scheduler won't be doing its job.

Yah, I know -- but folding with two "cores" with HT gets me more PPD then just using one client - wanting to see if I could make HT let me fold on the core and the GPU, even though it's still a single core CPU. (When folding with a GPU, you can't fold with your CPU, unless you have a dual core since the CPU has to monitor the GPU ...)
If you catch my drift. :\

yes it can be done.
I ran my X1950pro in my 630j rig for about 5months beofre I switched the GPU into my e6700 rig. HT cpu's will run 2x instances of F@H, but I have not had any luck doing it in a 32bit OS...so I reverted to x64 for folding use. If you do decide to run it, use core_0 for F@H and core_1 for all other tasks. Depending on the GPU and the cards memory, you could really bog your rig down...and you will have faster WU times if you use both cores to monitor the GPU instead. running GPU+CPU F@H on my e6700 rig, increases GPU WU times, by 8-9x..over running GPU only. GPU times per/frame, while folding with 1 core on the cpu = 8.1sec/frame GPU times per/frame, with just GPU folding = 1.6sec/frame I can only imagine those increases to be exponentially larger, using a HT cpu.

Running one CPU client and one GPU client is probably the best way to get the most performance from a P4 system with HT. The CPU client will run on the CPU thread, and the HT thread is enough to keep the GPU fed with data. There is a very minor performance hit on the CPU client, but nothing like trying to run two CPU clients.
Adding an AGP GPU card and client to an aging P4 system is one of the most economical (initial cost), easiest, and least intrusive way to upgrade the computer, and upgrade your PPD. Yes, of course, for not much more, you could build a whole new C2D system, and double the points, but the cost is double, and who's got the time to build a new system for your Mom, Brother, SO? For me, maybe... ![]() |

...i dont know what kind of GPU's you are referring too..

see here-> ![]() I think we all know how a P4 w/HT compares to a C2D....

Well, until I have the money to buy an X1600/X1800/X1900, I'm happy with it pulling 600PPD in Windows SMP
