Default How to install SMP client on Windows Vista

*** UNDER CONSTRUCTION ***

This guide will be useful to those seeking to install the SMP client on their Folding rig using Windows Vista.

How-To Disable UAC:

Start > Type in the search box "cmd.exe" and right click on it > Click on Run as Administrator > then type in "msconfig" > Go to the Tools tab

2) (see figure 1.1) Click on Disable UAC > Click on Launch > Restart computer

Figure 1.1

After reboot please follow the guide below in order to prevent any further complications with the UAC prompts

Guide:

1) Visit this site to Download the client.

Found under the title:

"Windows XP/2003/Vista/2008 SMP client console version Read this forum post first! (it has directions for 5.92 that also apply for 6.22) "

2) Once you have Downloaded it click on the installer.

3) Now since we are in Vista there are some security issues with the FAH folder being in C:\Program Files\ so you want to make sure that the directory is C:\Users\%username%\FAH\. Normally the installer chooses this regardless.

4) After the installation is complete you can now proceed to your folder. "Start" > "%username%" > "FAH"

5) Double click on your FAH folder. Right click on "install.bat" and choose "Run as Administrator" this will prompt you to a command window.
  • First command line hit enter
  • Type in your Windows Vista login password.
  • Re-type your Windows Vista login password.

*** It is normal that you will not see anything being written for your password ***

After you have entered your last password you should see this message if the installation was successful:

Code:
If you see this twice, MPI is working
If you see this twice, MPI is working
Press any key afterwards to close install.bat.

6) Right click on the "fah.exe" and create a shortcut. Drag the shortcut to your desktop. Then, right click on the shortcut you just made. Choose "Properties". In the "target" field you see something written in quotations. At the end of all that, add -smp (outside the quotation marks).

7) Now you are ready to start the "fah.exe" located on your Desktop. Click on it and you should be directed to this:

8) Now it is time to enter your configurations.
  • User name [default]? <Write your folding user name here>
  • Team Number [0]? 37726
  • Launch automatically at machine statup, installing this as a service (yes/no) [no]? <Hit Enter> (see Footnote #1)
  • Ask before fetching/sending work (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter>
  • Use Internet Explorer Settings (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter>
  • Use proxy (yes/no) [no]? <Hit Enter>
  • Allow receipt of work assignments and return of work results greater than 5MB in size (such work units may have large memory demands (no/yes) [no]? yes
  • Change advanced options (yes/no) [no]? yes
  • Core Priority (idle/low) [idle]? <Hit Enter>
  • CPU usage requested (5-100) [100]? <Hit Enter>
  • Disable highly optimized assembly code (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter>
  • Pause if battery power is being used (useful for laptops) (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter>
  • Interval, in minutes, between checkpoints (3-30) [15]? 3 (see Footnote #2)
  • Memory, in MB, to indicate (xxxx available) [xxxx]? <Hit Enter>
  • Request work units without deadlines (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter>
  • Set -advmethods flag always, requesting new advanced scientific cores and/or work units if available (no/yes) [no]? yes
  • Ignore any deadline information (mainly useful if system clock frequently has errors) (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter>
  • Machine ID (1-8) [1]? <Hit Enter>

9) Now you are ready to start folding A very useful application to add to WinSMP is FahMon which you can find here.

Footnotes:
  1. Quote:
    1. Configure as usual, make sure you say [yes] to “Install as a service.”

    2. Don’t start the service yet. Go to the Services management console (Start->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services) and look for the service that starts with FAH. Open the properties for that service and go to the Log On tab. In this tab, check “This account” instead of the default “Local System account” option and fill in the account you used to install the client. The account used to install the client must have administrative privileges for this step to work.

    3. This step is optional, but recommended for the SMP client. Enter the registry editor (Start->Run->regedit.exe) to edit the registry entry for the FAH service. The default location for this is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServic esFAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01+fah. If you installed in a place other than the default, the key name will be different, but it will still be in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServic es and will still start with FAH@. Select this key and edit the ImagePath key and append “ –forceasm” to the “Value data” field.

    4. Close the registry editor and reboot. Trying to start the service without rebooting will not work, you must reboot.

    Source
  2. If you are running an older machine <Hit Enter> to keep it at default intervals.

If you wish me to add anything to this, or see errors in my guide please feel free to bring them up. The sole purpose of this was to make it easier for those using Windows Vista to get it set-up.

you shouldn't need to. 1 SMP client does all the cores of your CPU.

I think for the majority of users, that setting should be <No>.

And you should set the advmethods flag to yes, and set the checkpoint interval to 3 mins.
