Default Running dual instances of SMP Guide (WIN XP)

First off, in order to run dual instances of SMP, you have to have a quad. If your running a duo, you can run SMP, just not dual instances. Ok, lets get setup. First, go ahead and download SMP 5.91, here is the link.http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

This will download into your program files/Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01 folder. Once you have downloaded one instance, go ahead and download it again. It will ask you if you want to uninstall the old version, click no.

Now you need to find a new folder to put the second instance in, you can't have both instances in the same folder. It doesn't matter where you put the second folder, just download it where you can find it. Here is how you do this. When your installing the second instance, hit the browse button when you get to here.

Now here, all I did was add "part 2" to the end of the original directory. I wanted to keep it simple.

So, now you should have both instances downloaded in 2 different folders. This is what mine looks like. Notice how I have my second folder inside my first folder. I find it easier to keep track of this way.

Now that you have your SMP clients downloaded, you need to download and install the affinity changer. I have found that you get better performance if you run the affinity changer before you start up your SMP clients. I can't explain the reasoning behind this, I just know it works better.

Here is the link for the affinity changer and directions.http://distributed.org.ua/forum/inde...showtopic=1149
Once you install and run the affinity changer, you can now get the SMP clients running.

At this point, you will need to make sure you have a windows password in place. If you don't have a password created yet, you will need to create one before the next step. If you already have a password, go on to the next step. To create a password, go to the control panel/user accounts, and click on you or administrator, then click on create password. Once you have created your password, you can move on to the next step.

Go to your program files/ Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01 folder and open it up. Once you have the folder open, you need to run the MS-DOS Batch File.

Once you open the batch file, you will see a blinking curser on the black screen, hit enter. Now it should ask you for your password at this time. Type in your password, you wont be able to see the letters, this is normal. After you type in your password, hit enter. You will need to type it one more time for comfirmation, hit enter again. Now you are ready to get the SMP client configured. Click on the FAH icon, its the one circled in the picture.

Your firewall is going to ask for permission for these programs to access the internet, say yes.

Now your ready to configure SMP.
User name [default]? (Write your folding user name here)
Team Number [0]? 37726
Launch automatically at machine statup, installing this as a service (yes/no) [no]? <Hit Enter>

Ask before fetching/sending work (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter> (I would say NO)
Use Internet Explorer Settings (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter> (I would say NO)
Use proxy (yes/no) [no]? <Hit Enter> (I would say NO)
Allow receipt of work assignments and return of work results greater than 5MB in size (such work units may have large memory demands (no/yes) [no]? (I would say YES)
Change advanced options (yes/no) [no]? (YES)
Core Priority (idle/low) [idle]? <Hit Enter>
CPU usage requested (5-100) [100]? <Hit Enter>
Disable highly optimized assembly code (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter>
Pause if battery power is being used (useful for laptops) (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter>
Interval, in minutes, between checkpoints (3-30) [15]? (I would say 3)
Memory, in MB, to indicate (xxxx available) [xxxx]? <Hit Enter>
Request work units without deadlines (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter>
Set -advmethods flag always, requesting new advanced scientific cores and/or work units if available (no/yes) [no]? (I say NO here, others say YES)
Ignore any deadline information (mainly useful if system clock frequently has errors) (no/yes) [no]? <Hit Enter>
Machine ID (1-8) [1]? <Hit Enter> Put a #1 on your first instance, Put a #2 on your second instance.

After you get the first instance configured, it will automatically start folding. Now go and do the same steps for your second instance. Make sure you put different Machine ID #'s on each instance. The Machine ID # is the last question in your configuration.

You should now be folding, running dual instances on your quad.

If i have left anything out, or you would like to add anything, please give me your input.

Hey Chris,

If you want some additional information for the configurations of the SMP be sure to check my guide for vista here. For some folders setting the IE SETTINGS to [yes] is really their only way to get the SMP client working properly (it is the case for me). You might want to include that in your guide

I usually create a shortcut to each of the folders on my desktop.

Then I right click the shortcuts and add my flags under "properties"

that way when I hit the shortcuts it uses the flags

Bravo! Where's this man's title?

Only other thing I'd perhaps list is the options for flags on the shortcut target for changing any preferences like verbosity and such.
