Default Why you shouldn't run smp+gpu2

From the folding forums

Yes, Vista show the real cpu usage and if it's 50% with a dual core, it mean that a core is fully utilized. With XP, whenever a single core is fully used, it show 100%. It's a matter of semantics.

I agree with toTOW that running 2xSMP + GPU2 is not recommended and even dangerous since one SMP instance is running on a single core, which mean it will always get over the deadlines and waste the WU (only the 2665 seems to be ok but don't sit on this).

Please don't go in this discussion again : Stanford recommends one fahcore per physical core and we're already not following this advice with SMP + GPU ... so 2 SMP + GPU is defintively worse.

You get 3300 ppd on Q6600@3.6 GHz rinning 1x 2653 WU, and you get 4400 ppd on the same machine running 2x 2653 WUs... Does it mean sience suffers?

Yes science suffers ... if it wasn't suffering, you should produce 3300 * 2 = 6600 PPD ... and it's not the case.

RU_Hil, I'm already doing 2xSMP with 2 VM instances per quad box so I do agree partially with you about improving efficiency. However, when we are adding a GPU2, one SMP client will suffer greatly and this is bad for science. With a quad, the best way is SMP (under VM)+Uniprocessor+GPU2

I sort of get what they are saying but can you guys elaborate on this?

Right now I'm running a simple single core client for one core and leaving the other 3 free for the gpu client...

edit: also i notice that core temp shows the loads of each cores differently then xp does. Perhaps these are the real numbers of the load on each core?

thats what im running, meeting deadlines, one smp on two cores, another on the other two, both with priority set to below normal, and gpu2 client running on one of the cores with normal priority and im getting 4k/day out of my gpu, and my one vmware runs as always, the other instead of ~11min/% its upto about 14.

As long as you meet the deadlines, what's the problem?

Quad Rig in 24hrs Testing:

1 GPU2 Client with 8800GT 512 = 4980.71
1 SMP NATIVE Client on WU 2665 = 1489.12

Total PPD for 1 Rig = 6469.83

And Still enough CPU to surf the web/run excel/word!

I just stated running a GPU2 client with both of my VMware SMP clients running at the same time and show little to any slowdown. As long as it gets done, whats the problem.

Well if Stanford doesn't like it they can boot me off their project. Science Suffers my ass.

It's this attitude and the wierd disparity in PPD that is making a lot of enthusiasts drop Folding.

There are plenty of DC projects that do a lot of good. WCG for instance with the BOINC client is very useful and shows results in the real world. Stanford is not the only game in town. If they want to keep a share of the DC enthusiasts they better roll out the red carpet and lose the snotty attitude.

I am running two SMP on two quads and GPU2 on my rig and seeing no real hang up. GPU2 is about half as fast...but whatever.

I realize a lot of Uber FOlders are way beyond me in that they use VMware/Linux/Affinity SW etc etc etc...if this is hurting Stanford's efforts then they simply need to code their client to make all of that impossible or impractical. People are going to go for max PPD...that's the whole point of even having PPD: it's like an e-pizza right?

I've noticed my SMP has almost stopped completely, like no progress has been made. It was fine before but I set GPU to have a higher priority and SMP to use max 90% of CPU. Anyways I think I'll get rid of SMP and get a normal client on one core and leave the other for GPU, what do you guys think?
