Default Please lets all FOLD for each other. Lets Unite.

Hello people of OCN and the world of the Internet.

Fairly recently I have realised how important the FOLDING program really is to us as a people not just OCN, it is a world wide effort!. FOLDING is helping scientists and researchers understand the foundations of the diseases that we face today. Without research or understanding we have no hope of eventually finding cures or treatments for the diseases we live with today.

The Folding project is one of the most noble projects I have ever known of. Not only is it great that we are sharing out computational power to help learn about diseases and Genetic errors but The Folding Project unites us as a people. We all have a common interest. That common interest is to combat ill health.

When we FOLD we are not just sending back Work unit information to servers across the globe, NO. It is alot bigger than that. We are helping eachother. There is no MR Invincible in this world, you can be struck down with a Disease/condition at any point in life. When you fold you could be helping a Friend,Family A nextdoor neighbour Or even yourself.

I welcome the competiveness within Folding. It pushes us to perform better and better everyday which in turn gets that Work Unit done quicker and quicker. The quicker the researchers can get there hands on this information the better. You never know...that one Work Unit you complete may be the KEY !.

Overall its not about the PPD and how much you can score in a month, thats just the incentive and a good one for sure. However in the long scheme of things your doing it for the people. Just remember that.

I have realised how important folding really is to the medical world. I soon hope to have a suitable folding rig again soon to fight for the cause.

Unfortunately recently I had some very bad news. For the last few months now I have been going to Genetic counselling due to the fact I found out that Huntindons runs in my Family. My Grandad had Huntindons and its a 50/50 chance that your child may also have it, this child would be my Dad in this case. By Mistake I found out that the disease ran in my family and that my Dad had previously been tested for the disease. He ultimately chose that he did not want to know the results as he did not want a dark cloud looming over him. I respect that and I can fully understand that.

I had a very hard choice to make. Do I get tested ?. The answer was yes. I did not have the luxury of avoiding the issue as I now have a daughter to think about and as a parent you have to be responsible.

Unfortunately I am Positive for Huntintons. Its a very strange feeling knowing how you are going to die if you reach the end.

I am not scared for myself as there is nothing to be scared of. Im not scared of death. I am only scared of how I LIVE my life now !, you need to make the most of it and that should be the attitude for everyone regardless.I am only scared for my little girl who could indeed inherit the disease. Unfortunately only time will tell. It will be a long wait for me and Lesa who is my GF.

There is no cure or fully effective treatment for Huntintons. I do hold hope that perhaps one day the Folding project or a project similar will come through for my daughter.

In brief Huntintons is a disease that will attack the nervous system,It kills off your braincells. Due to the fact it attacks such a fundamental part of the body it can cause MANY effects. Generally Huntindons will follow in an age trend. My Grandad started showing symptoms at around 60ish. My dad is now coming up for 50 and so far so good he definately has the disease otherwise I would not have it. Huntintons is always develping in your system....you only show symptoms once its reached a certain stage. If you are postive then you will definately fully develop the condition. There is no doubt about that.

Here is a brief Quote on the Disease

Quote:
Huntington's disease, also called Huntington's chorea, chorea major, or HD, is a genetic neurological disorder characterized by abnormal body movements called chorea and a lack of coordination; it also affects a number of mental abilities and some aspects of behavior. The name is derived from the physician George Huntington who described the disorder in 1872. In 1993 the gene causing HD was found, making it one of the first inherited genetic disorders for which an accurate test could be performed. Because of this, and the disorder having aspects applicable to other neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, it has been extensively researched since then.
The gene causing the disorder is dominant and may, therefore, be inherited from a single parent. Global incidence varies, from 3 to 7 per 100,000 people of Western European descent, down to 1 per 1,000,000 of Asian and African descent. The onset of physical symptoms in Huntington's disease occur in a large range around a mean of a person's late forties to early fifties. If symptoms become noticeable before a person is twenty, then their condition is known as Juvenile HD.
Huntington's disease is one of several polyglutamine diseases caused by a trinucleotide repeat expansion. This expansion is in the Huntingtin gene, which normally codes for Huntingtin protein (Htt), producing mutant Huntingtin (mHtt). The presence of this protein increases the rate of neuron cell death in select areas of the brain, affecting certain neurological functions. The loss of neurons isn't fatal, but complications caused by symptoms reduce life expectancy. There is currently no proven cure, so symptoms are managed with a range of medications and supportive services
There is SO much on the topic here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntington's_disease

Anyone wanting to expand there knowledge on it really should visit the link above.

Since I have found this out it has perhaps widened my view on the folding project. I always endorsed folding and thought it was an awesome thing to do. However things get put into perspective more once it becomes more personal to you .

I am very much looking forward to a Happy life with my new found family thats for sure. You should never let bad news such as this stop you in life. There are things to be done and fun to be had.

I am only 19 and I know that I have a long time to go in life and I am going to try and enjoy it as much as I can. We all should regardless of our circumstances.

Once I have a half decent rig for folding I sure as hell will start again.

My message to you ALL is this really. Enjoy life. Spend time with family and your loved ones. Help people when you can without wanting something back for it !. Make the most of EVERYTHING because you will never know when it is going to be gone.

Time is a companian that travels with us through the rivers of life. Its what you do with that time that matters.

For those new to the folding concept here is some information about it:

Quote:
What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help by simply running a piece of software.
Folding@home is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.

Folding FAQ - Everything you need to know in one location (for new and old folders!)

Quote:
What, how, and why?
  • What is folding? Folding is a worldwide distributed computing effort conducted by Stanford University to understand how proteins assemble themselves. The real world applications of this research includes potential cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's, cancer, and Parkinson's. Nearly everyone's life has been touched by someone who has had one of these diseases or one of the many other diseases this research is aiming to cure. For more information, please see Stanford's Folding@Home website.
  • How can I join Overclock.net's team? Simply go here, download the program, and enter team number 37726 to start folding for our team. Post your folding name in this thread to receive the nifty folding icon in your postbit. This icon will appear approximately 24 hours after you have both completed your first work unit and have posted in that thread. Please do not post in this thread until your name appears on Stanford's site in the link above as it will cause potentially significant delays in getting your postbit info.
  • Why should I fold? What's in it for me? In addition to the knowledge that you're contributing to a very good cause, we offer contests and prizes to our folding team members.
  • I don't have a high powered folding farm. Can I still win prizes? Absolutely! We offer a team competition that's perfect for non-power folders. The folding power of each four person team is limited so no individual folder is too small to contribute.
  • What does it cost? The software is free, and there are no fees of any kind for participating in folding. If you fold 24/7 and/or have several computers folding, you will likely notice a small increase in your electric bill.

Hello again to the people of OCN and the Internet.

I just wanted to give you guys a little update I guess. This thread was written a long while back and alot has happend with me since its writing and mainly due to HD. Unfortunately its a sad but with an overall new beginning. Since the writing of this thread ( Some of you may already be aware ) I was kicked out of my Home mainly due to HD as some of my Family did not want me to have the test done and as such couldnt beleive what I had done!, I have a responsibility to both myself and my daughter to know...However some of my Family did not wish to understand my predicament and instead removed me from the whole equation

Since being kicked out I lived at a mates for a little while both getting over my diagnoses and being abandoned by One side of my family. It was a very tough time for me and affected me badly. I was then shipped off to live with my uncle for a couple of months to try and start my life all over again...Yet again with failure as I was still depressed and grieving It was a major bummer.

There were times when you just wanted to give up and be swallowed by a black hole to end the pain of it all. However I decided to fight on through as I have never let anything kick my down and keep me down and I was going to be damned if I was going to let even HD kick me down. I have resposibilities in life. I could not give up. It was a very slow recovery and I took it one day at a time as life is generally easier that way and has been my way of dealing with life for a long time because you never know if tommorow will bring pain or happiness. Its just the way things are!

The good news is that I am now living back with my mum bless her as she has been so supportive ! and I am now also in a position to start my FOLDING again. My life starts again here and NOW.

The most important thing I can say to those who has any type of illness or hardship is to NEVER EVER give in. Fight and Fight as hard as you can as things will be ok in the end. The only time there is no hope is when you have no hope left in yourself. Make hope for yourself by getting something to fight for...even if you are beaten down and broken !

Keep your mind active ! I did this by hanging around OCN when I could

There is nothing we cannot do in this world. We have not even scratched the surface of the power of the human spirit and human potential.

It is good to be back and in high spirits and I have my Family and more so my OCN Family to thank for that...More than you know I am in your debt.

Never Give up!

and as always..........

Fold For The Cause ! Fold For The People .

I would like to say a BIG thanks to all the Forum staff and there support for me in the Directors Cave and another BIG thanks to all those who FOLD!.

Your friend ENTERPRISE,Kim

I started simply in hopes to help everyone, then my Mom became a cancer fighter, she lost. Little did I know my small contribution grow into a small folding farm and do what I can afford. Thus my plea to get folding in my signature.

Enterprise,

Well said.

I fold for team 31630, Nerds-For-Jesus, however, I do post on other forums dealing with folding to learn, help and further the cause for other teams.

Yes, it's a united front to Fold At Home, helping just "your" team isn't helping everyone to achieve a cure or a solution to extend life by decades. Helping other people and other teams gets to the solutions faster helps everyone.

It's still fun having teams and working for the cause. Keeping a simple trick and hint secretive isn't helping the cause. Everyone needs to get in on the action for the benefits F@H provides to the medical community at large.

Keep folding everyone, you very life or those you love depend on it!

I feel you ENTERPRISE. That what got me in to folding. I realize a couple of years ago my dad had the first signs of Alzheimer's. Seeing a man that had did everything that he could to give us a home and be left without al he's life. And now to see him in the state that he is in is painful.
By what he is going thru, I realized that it runs in the family. Great granddad down to my dad. Knowing that I too can be next in line.

To make a long story short. That's what got me in to folding. I didn't know what it was till I got here in this forum. And realized what it was for and how important it is to get involved.
If it is not for me. It's for the kids of the future.
