Arrow How To: Setup SMP Folding in Native Ubuntu

This is just an alternative method of getting the SMP folding@home client working in native Ubuntu.

Requirements:
  • 64-bit Ubuntu

1) Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download

2) Download the Linux Client (6.02), here is the complete name:

Code:
Linux (x86) and BSD *combined uniprocessor and SMP client* (64-bit required for SMP)
Note: The file should have downloaded straight onto your desktop.

3) Create a "New Folder" by right clicking on the desktop. I choose to name my folder "smp". Drag the downloaded file into this folder.

4) Double click on the file you just put into this folder (FAH6.02-Linux.tgz).

Note: You should see two files in here.

5) Extract them both to the folder. Simply double click on the file and hit "Extract".

6) Now its time to go into the terminal:

"Applications">"Accessories">"Terminal"

7) Here are the commands:

Code:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
Code:
cd /home/%username%/Desktop/smp
chmod +x FAH6.02-Linux.tgz
./fah6 -smp
Note: smp (in ONLY the first command line) = name of the folder that I created. Replace it with the name of your folder.

8) Enter your configurations now and you are ready to fold

In case of a shutdown and you want to start the client again:

Code:
cd /home/%username%/Desktop/smp
./fah6 -smp

32-bit doesn't want anything to do with SMP folding; hence, the part that says (64-bit required for SMP)

Excellent guide! This will also help people with like an E2180 or other CPU's that do not support Virtualization Technology because they will now be able to fold 64bit SMP.

So that's why my e2180 wasn't working when I tried it. I had no idea it didn't support virtulization.
