I've made the decision to fold for the cause, so I'm going to put whatever I can into it. I'm buying a mountain mods case that can fit 2 computers, one is going to have the computer I'll be using, which will feature an ATI 3870 X2 and a C2D E8600 overclocked to whatever I can manage, the second half will be the real folding strength, I'm going to do quad SLI on 2 9800GX2s on an Nvidia board, which will have, most likely, a higher end quad overclocked quite a bit as well.
MY ONLY CONCERN IS...for the quad SLI 9800 GX2s, should I use 2 5-600 watt power supplies ( I need to have the connectors right from the power supplies, I'm not going to use adapters, as it didn't work out for me well before), or is there currently a power supply out BESIDES the Corsair HX1000 power supply that isn't so expensive, and has dual 8pin PCI express, with dual 6 pin PCI express also. I also will need to gather info on how to do multiple GPU folding, the folding half will be running XP, nothing will be attached to it but ethernet, and power once I get it running stable. I'll be monitoring it using Logmein software, so I can have control over the OS from my main computer. So, back to the main idea; does this sound alright? THe main purpose of this, is that I know ATI cards do not fold well, and I want to have my machine folding CAPABLE; but I don't want to use another Nvidia board as my mainboard, because I always seem to have memory issues, and I can't SLI on an Intel based board obviously. -UPDATE- I think I have decided on the parts I'm going to get. This machine is meant to be an aesthetic addition to my computer (the case will have both setups in it), but still alright parts. GPU- I'll be using a Foxconn 9800 GTX+ for folding, I might grab a second one for the heck of it if I have the funding CPU- Good old Q6600, overclocked hopefully to around 3.5 GHZ Motherboard- DFI LP DK P45, DFI boards are good for overclocking, it's not all that expensive and it fits my "heat" theme for the folding side of the machine. Power supply- Hiper type M II 730watt Kinda locked down for options, I want the LEAST power, but anything near or close to 5-600 watts don't have enough PCI power connectors for 2 9800 GTX+s So, NOW what do you think? I'll most likely be running folding under an SMP client and in VMware under Vista 64 bit.

This sounds like a really good idea. I have 2 suggestions if I may. (1) run Vista instead of XP. Xp uses an entire core for the GPU2 client vs. Vista only using 7%. (2) This is the PSU I have in my sig rig, looks like everything your looking for.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171022

Sweet, welcome to the fold

Looks to be some great PPD for sure..Using Vista..you could probably net ~25k PPD with the 'designated folding side' only.
*4x GPU clients..and what..1x SMP?..since core usage is soo low on GPU clients with Vista..can you run 2x VMware SMP's + 4x GPU clients?

Hmm..I guess I could throw Vista on it instead. I run Vista normally anyways, I was just opting for XP since I have a CD that..well, anyways, have to learn how to set up the SMP stuff, along with multi-GPU. WHen I finally have money to get this project moving, I'll certainly keep you guys updated
Specifically though, setting up GX2s for folding, to me, soundsl ike it could be difficult, I could be wrong though. Let me know any information you have regarding what I plan to do, since I'll end up asking at some point anyways AHAHA! Thank you for your support!

Sounds good..I would love to see some pics of the rig as well!!
![]() *GPU folding is as hard as; installing client..making a shortcut..and then editing its properties..done.

yeah, I'll definitely put some pics up!
Yeah, but what about multi GPU folding? Don't you have to run extra instances of the GPU2 client to use all the GPUs?

Yes..1x client per GPU..not a big deal though. Just make sure to put them in separate folders and create shortcuts for them on your desktop. Once you are that far, check back.

Alright
I don't have to change the machine ID or anything, it'll just automatically run it on the next available GPU? And, this won't be done for porbably up to a month of two.Edit: Wow, thank you for the power supply list, that helps a lot
