No, with xp you are able to extend your desktop without having a monitor plugged in, its only in vista do you need a dummy plug.

They are very easy to make and I toyed around with the idea of selling em here on OCN for a few $, all you need is a dvi-vga adapter and 3 68ohm resistors

no problem, the only downside with folding with xp is that each GPU2 process eats up a whole core. With vista it only eats up 10%, I think the $4 for the plug is worth not having it eat up core usage

actually with vista it takes up less than 10%. i'd say 5-7% from what i've seen on my other comps. and i agree with the dummy plug inssue. spending that little bit for pretty much a whole core free. i'll take that anyday.

not only that though, if you've recently bought a GPU, it'll come with 1-2 dvi->vga adapters. then resistors from radioshack is 99cents. so its relatively cheap.

yep, and if you are buying them online you can get them around .06c a resistor, and if you get two with each GFX card you are set.
