Default Need to fold as service on a quad. Please Help!

Ok, well I just finished putting together my uncle's phenom 9950 rig. I explained to him what folding was and if I could set it up on his computer and he agreed. The problem is that I told him that I would set it up to run in the background so he wouldnt have to mess with it. This seems to be a lot harder than I previously thought..

I didnt bother with the smp client because I heard that it doesnt work right when run as a service (plus my uncle doesn't use a password on his user account, and the smp client requires a password). I tried setting up 4 console clients to run as services but I cant get that to work right either .

Ive spent hours on this and I still cant get it to work right. Someone please help me!

BTW he is running Vista Ultimate x64

Maybe you should try the VMware Server + Linux SMP method.

only thing i can think of is.... have him make a simple pw like just hitting the spacebar then enter. that would work. then you could just set up SMP as a service. i wouldn't really know about the regular console clients.. =\

^ What he said, then maybe create two .bat files to disable/enable the service easily?

I used to run it as a service in Vista x64 and it ran fine btw ;]

Ok, well I figured out how to run 4 consoles by reading this article. I have all 4 cores folding right now, but now Im wondering if I should switch to the smp client. According to this article, I can set Vista to auto login with a password (my uncle doesnt want to type in his password each time he logs in).

Now here is the main issue: This computer is not going to be running 24/7 so I'm not sure if it will meet the short SMP deadlines. I know there is an option to ignore deadlines, but will this affect points earned? Basically, would I be better off running 4 consoles with deadlines enabled or 1 SMP client with deadlines disabled?

You won't get points for a WU returned after the final deadline. Even so, a quad core Intel can crunch through a SMP WU in just a few hours, so even if the computer is off for half the day you should have no problem meeting deadlines.

And you'll get a LOT more points running SMP as opposed to single core WUs.

Edit: Oops, I see it's a 9950. I have no idea how those perform.

They should chug through them about the same as C2Q's do

The 9950 is a very powerful chip, so it seems like he's just stating a fact. And no, I don't run AMD. All of my computers are Intel.
