it took me an hour to find that "sudo get essential" command. that was just to get the stuff i needed to compile the FAHMON program before i could even use it. and then if some other program requires you compile something with a different compiler, you have to search and download that. sure it'll all work once you get everything you need for it, but until then it's useless.

and my first day with windows 3.1 was very easy. install DOS... done. install windows... done. reboot, C:\>win boom windows. the rest of the day consisted of me trying to re-allocate my startup programs into my awesome 1MB of memory while at the same time, no going too far into my video shadow ram, so that i could get more than 384K of usable ram for windows this was also back when my 4800 baud modem was connecting me to BBS' all over the western U.S.

but i'll give you that i know where most everything is at in windows and i know how to find out where the other stuff is at. not so much in linux. it's just not for me. everything i want to do on a computer, i can do in windows, so i don't see how linux will be any better.

That's why it's included in the guide. I could have taken a picture of which buttons to click in the GUI to do the same thing, but it turns out to be much faster to just type it in.

You had 1MB of RAM? When I started, I had 16KB of RAM! I remember in 1989 when I went from 128KB to 512KB and installed OS-9 and suddenly I had a GUI and could multitask! (Though using a joystick instead of a mouse was a little weird.) Using Windows 3.1 years later was a disappointment, even though it did have more colors, since it couldn't multitask properly.

Well, if you don't know it, you don't know it. But you prefer Windows, as you say, solely because you're familiar with all its idiosyncrasies, quirks and workarounds, and not so much with Linux. It's fair. Though it does take a more than a day to unlearn Windows, so to speak, so I will have to think that you have never fully tried Linux. (See also Lattyware's Linux Challenge elsewhere in the forum.)

I'll suggest, though, that since you're a "PC Gamer" you wait a year before you try Linux again.

Okay I followed the guide and it works fine so thanks, one quick question every now and then ubuntu stops responding for about 10-20 seconds and then it starts again. Do you have any idea what it could be?

Edit:- Okay so every now and then is now every 10 seconds, is unusable

Just turned all visual effects off and all okay now, should have thought about it a bit more!

Also @ pixie I do not think it was about the content of your conversation, just not in the guide made to help people, opposed to discussing the pros and cons of Linux!

The GPU itself doesn't have any concept of process priority, so the GPU2 folding core competes with your desktop effects and everything else. You can work around this by reducing the client's CPU usage a bit. I reduced it from 100 to 95 and now my desktop effects are mostly fine.

Since I'm not gaming I've been thinking about getting a 7300 or something extremely cheap to run the desktop on, while folding on the 9800GT.

okay might look at the same, also is it normal to need two SMP clients to max the cores 100%? well they are not 100% all the time?

Ran into a bit of a snag. Most of the install went well, except for when I tried to install the CUDA-enabled drivers. When I told the software to install the 32-bit compatibility OpenGL libraries, I got hit with some error messages-- should have screenshotted them. But everything else went smoothly, right up until I attempted to run the software with the oneunit flag.

Quote:
Launch directory: Z:homethiosknvidia0
Executable: Folding@home-Win32-GPU.exe
Arguments: -oneunit -forcegpu nvidia_g80 -gpu 0

[06:13:42] - Ask before connecting: No
[06:13:42] - User name: thiosk (Team 37726)
[06:13:42] - User ID: 1804C56150C3BE6A
[06:13:42] - Machine ID: 2
[06:13:42]

A potential conflict was detected:

Process 15 is currently running and may also be a client with Mach. ID 2.
The program will now exit. Upon restart, this check will not be done --
You may wish to check that no client is currently running in
Z:homethiosknvidia0 before restarting.
If I allow this to continue, it just keeps trying different sequential WUs before hanging and refusing to do anything at all.

Thus, i believe the problem is with my 32 bit compatibility libs, so any assistance in this area would be great.

I don wanna use vista no mo, i have had it all of 3 days and installed mint6 x64, so im a linux noob fo sho

well I did a few reboots, changed the memory value to 256 (even tho I have 1870ish avaliable) and fired it up again, and this time THIS came up:

so folding linux = pissed

I went back and deleted my work folder, logs, and queue.dat file to imitate my attempts to get the smp running. Worked last time, right? No change, just crashed again. Strangely, during the crash, as its communicating to the mothership and so on, I get popped out of the program and go back to prompt. But nvidia is still operating as near as i can tell...
