I will have to try this on my one card folding rig when my HDD gets back from RMA.

I'm not like a hardcore user but I have a Linux box (out of commission ATM though) and I have 3 Kubuntu VMs and a Xubuntu VM. Been messing with Linux since like 7th grade. Back then it was SUSE. Games are the only thing holding me back from going all linux.

Well I just updated ubuntu today and it updated the kernel on me. I redid the steps the guide said for updating the cuda drivers and all seem fine except I'm stuck in 800x600 mode. I can't change resolutions at all.

Is there a trick to get my 1680x1050 monitor going in all its glory again?

Do you mean the NVIDIA X Server Settings? If so, no luck there either. and I'm in 640x480 mode which is really lame to have as a default mode as all menus are programmed for 800x600 and since I can't move them past the top I can't select any of the options such as accept/ok/exit etc...

I even wen't into recovery mode and even tried going into the older kernel recovery mode with no luck.

I did see however the x-config list in the control panel, but there were sao many different spots for resolutions that I didn't know which one to swap out.

also, I have 4 GPUs for folding and they all fold thanks to your guide, but I just can't get in hi-res mode.

I'm open for any other suggestions

Did you try running sudo nvidia-xconfig ?

Also check the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and make sure the monitor horizontal and vertical sync ranges are correct. Sometimes they get a little mixed up and then the video driver thinks your monitor sucks and runs only at 800x600 or whatever.

Yes, I already did the nvidia-xconfig thing. It just exited immediately and didn't ask for any input.

My xorg.conf files seems fine. It seems to see my monitor as generic plug and play. Not sure what I should change anything to so I'll post my file and hope for some suggested changes.

Here's a copy of my xorg.conf
Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder58) Sun Dec 14 20:59:16 PST 2008

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
# values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
#
# You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
# For example:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Well, yeah, it looks like someone hard-coded 640x480 into the xorg.conf file. I don't know if it was you, or some other utility. You should have about 3 or 4 backups of the file, so check them and see if one of them will work.

You should take out the sections referencing 640x480 or 640 480, take out the sections for all but the first monitor, and take out the sections for all but the first video card (which I presume you're using). You don't need those to fold, only if you want to run displays on the other cards.

WOOT!! Thanks for the help. They're all running. There were only a couple of backups and all dated yesterday. But there was a xorg.conf.1 and it was a xorg.conf looking file, but very small and only one monitor. I copied it over anyway and rebooted and viola!, I'm at 1680x1050 and folding on all 4 GPUs.

Here's the x0rg.conf.1 in case you care to look:
