I'm really thinking about doing this to a board or two of mine and testing a 8600GT, 8800GT, and my new GTX280.

If i understand correctly i could cut up the card OR the slot? because if only the cutting of the card is needed, i won't be messing with my precious little motherboard :P

If this would be sufficient, please tell me what i need to do to get this running, so that i can have that thing folding as well (my 9600GT i already have is also folding atm)

I currently have nVidia driver 180.84 if that helps anything.

Many thanks! (@dasparx: dit lijkt me geweldig man )

Cutting up your PCI-E Slot is neccesary. Depending on your MOBO Layout, you need to cut off the pci-e card's 'houdertje/haakje'

Okay, i will just cut open the back with a heated Stanley knife then (heat it 'till it's red and just cut like it's butter :P ), and i'll go look for a REALLY cheap 9500GT DDR3 on eBay.. or a second 9600GT Alpha Dog edition

PCI is capable of 133MB/s while x1 PCIe is capable for 250MB/s. In addition, PCI is a bus so its bandwidth is shared by all components on it. PCIe uses lanes which are dedicated interconnects. PCIe has MUCH more bandwidth than PCI especially if you have multiple cards.

Gigabyte and ASrock do have motherboards with x4 openback slots. I believe the reason that you don't see x1 openback slots is that there isn't enough support. The card can rock back and forth if it isn't secured to the case via backet. I believe this killed my motherboard: http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...-asus-p5e.html

This is Folding and not 3D gaming. Latency due to bandwidth limitation is not as big of an issue.

You also need to make sure there is clearence on your motherboard. Make sure there are no CMOS batteries or capacitors that would get in the way of seating the card.

Does this mean I can use my 3870 to fold while I use my 4870x2 to play games?

I can do that? Even better than. I never even looked into folding with a different card, so I can just put it in my spare x16, let windows install driver for it and I should be able to fold with it?

Nice, but I can't put myself to hurt the motherboard like that. and the card.
