Smile Eco Friendly Folding

Hey there Guys and Girls.

It has been a little while since I have REALLY been able to contribute anything to the Folding Cause due to some personal issue, BOOO. However today is a new day and this new day has bought me an Eco friendly folding GPU. I have recently purchased an ATI 4550 512mb G-card.

Everyone knows that the ATI cards do not perform as well in GPU folding compared to Nvidia cards due to current driver design, however I could not ignore the Eco friendly nature of this particular G-card and ATI cards overall. My Current card the ATI 4550 boasts a minimal TDP of 25Watts at full load. You cannot argue with that lol.

For those interested in the TDP of ATI cards please check here : Comparison of ATI graphics processing units

For those interested in the TDP of Nvidia cards please check here:Comparison of Nvidia graphics processing units

I have decided that a balance must be made when it comes to Folding for The Cause and our precious environment that we live in. I strongly believe in the Folding Project and I for personal reasons need it to come through for me and my child and for the many others affected by terrible diseases.

However not too long ago I realised that the time has come where I need to start thinking about my own Carbon footprint upon this earth. Let’s face it, what’s the point in finding cures for all these diseases if mankind goes ahead and destroys the environment anyway making the earth uninhabitable to Humans. So I have now decided that when I Fold I am going to make it as Eco friendly as possible.

I understand that there are many other Uber cards out there that offer great potential when it comes to folding. However this comes at a price...and that price is our environment.

As much as the Folding project means to me, the environment is of equal importance. Like I said what’s the point in Folding if we have no air to breathe Etc.

So whether you fold with a GPU or a CPU, Take into consideration your carbon footprint and your impact on this earth. If you are thinking of buying new components, take a break before purchasing and take a note of the power consumption and TDP ratings of your components and perhaps look for some more Eco friendly components. For those with folding farms, perhaps take some machines offline for 24 Hours every once in a while or periodically. Or If you have that extra cash to spend then perhaps look into offsetting your Carbon emmisions.

For those with sensitive Electric bills will also find this very useful as they can continue folding without increasing the Electric bills to the point of it being unaffordable. Also people who have not gotten into folding because the worry of utility bills can now consider Folding a program to get into due to the more Eco hardware now out.

Sacrifice some of your PPD to make your own personal carbon footprint smaller wherever possible.

We need balance. Balance has always been a good thing. What I say above may seem ‘’Nuts’’ to the Folding fanatics and people with Folding farms. However what I say is for the good of everyone...not just myself.

Please post in this thread if you use or intend to use any low power consumption hardware as it would be an interesting read.

Please Fold on as always Guys and Girls but also take a moment to consider this beautiful Earth we live on. We have no second chances with Mother earth!

Bring the balance

Fold For The People!, Fold For The Cause !

How much PPD does it get? (genuinely curious)

If you could , then we can figure out the PPD/W and see how efficient it is. I don't think we have any record of these cards in the database.

Outstanding post and I echo Bunny's comment/curiosity.

I've been considering a solar panel to supplement the power for my home which would hopefully cut back a bit on the electrical bill as well. Biking/walking to work is an option for me too, so I've taken that route when possible as well.

Shame we can't +rep the admins/mods around here sometimes.

Excellent sentiments. I'd like to add though, that the "greenest" solutions to most problems is not changing until you need it. That is, don't rush out to get the 4550 and update your rigs.

An analogy is "green remodeling." Just because an item is made in a more-green manner doesn't mean anything if what you have is working and doesn't need to be replaced.

All that being said, it's always a good idea to try to balance needs(wants) versus impact.

I am very Eco conscience. I have been aware of my carbon footprint for years now (as well as my water footprint, but that is another story). Years ago, I decided to lower my carbon footprint, or at the least offset it, by whatever means necessary. So, I donate 50% of my power usage to renewable energy resource charities., ie Wind, solar, hydro-electric, etc.

Cheers man. Great idea. I think Solar is one of the best ways to go along with wind energy. Let me know if you decide to get one of these installed
