Default Switched to Notfred's VMware Folding Client

Okay, because error10's VMware Folding Client was giving me so much trouble, I decided to give another Client a try. I came across Notfred's VMware Client, and decided to give it a try. Very easy to set up; followed this guide to get the Client up and running, but had to do some research before I managed to get FahMon working.

This guide is specific and to the point as well, and it was here that I found my answer to getting FahMon set up correctly. (For some reason, putting in my Machine name didn't work, I needed the IP address instead: \\<IP address>\c\etc\folding\1\)

EDIT: Another, more reliable method to set up FahMon is explained here, by our very own MadCatMk2! His picture makes it very clear how to set FahMon up without the need for an IP address, making it more reliable over time, .

The only complaint I have so far with Notfred's Client is that it does not track progress for you, but with FahMon working, it's not a big deal. Here's a screen shot of where I'm at so far:

As you can see, the Client itself shows no status whatsoever, hence the need of FahMon to view your progress. But, as I mentioned earlier, this is not too big of a deal, as FahMon works much better with Notfred's Client than it does with error10's Client (in my experience, that is). Hope this helps someone having problems with VMware SMP folding!

Anyone know what increase I could expect in PPD in an e8400 at stock if I used this?

I'm getting around 1500-1700 PPD right now.

EDIT: Sorry if I'm off-topic'ing in this thread.

What Client are you using to Fold right now? It's hard to tell how much of an increase you'd see without knowing what you're coming from.

Very nice. I will definitely keep VMware in mind, if I ever decide to run a CPU client alongside my GPU clients.

I dont want to do it with the stock Intel fan and lowly 2.7GHz.

Being the author of the Notfred's guide; I can tell you that error10's or B@lwolf's vmware clients are a little faster. The only advantage to Notfred's is that you don't need a hard drive. Some people with farms liked the extra energy savings.

EDIT: The reason their's runs faster is because Notfred is using an older Linux kernel

You should get a significant increase. Assuming clock for clock a phenom II is equivalent to a core 2 (they hover around each other's ballpark), you'll get PPD in the 2000s.

Where would I be able to find a download of B@lwolf's VMware Client and possibly a guide on how to set it up? I've been experimenting with many types of Folding since I started, so why not give one more a try?

I'm getting about 2850 PPD on my e6750 @ 3.40 with Notfred's Client. I never got a clear PPD measurement while running error10's Client, as I did not have FahMon configured correctly (I do now, but it's too late, ). With Windows SMP, I acheived around 1500 PPD.

The only reason I'm doing this is because I'm trying to find the best PPD I can get on my Core 2 Duo until I pick up an aftermarket cooler for my 4850 and start GPU2 Folding on it (card gets too hot with stock fan/heatsink). Thanks!
