Default Unstable overclock?

Hey fellow folders! Within the last week, I decided to start some folding. Mainly for two reasons -- 1. I didn't like my PC idling away while I was at class (folding is something productive), and 2. I don't pay for power per kWh here at college.

I have a measly little 8600gt, so I'm only able to pull about 1900ppd... (looking to grab a GTX260 come mid-may ) but I'm working my way up through the ranks regardless

OK, so on to the real issue-

I've noticed some of my units don't get completed properly....ie they crash. The log file reveals these for the crashes:
Quote:
[15:37:51] mdrun_gpu returned
[15:37:51] NANs detected on GPU
[15:37:51]
[15:37:51] Folding@home Core Shutdown: UNSTABLE_MACHINE
[15:37:54] CoreStatus = 7A (122)

[18:48:21] mdrun_gpu returned
[18:48:21] Nonzero force sum on GPU
[18:48:21]
[18:48:21] Folding@home Core Shutdown: UNSTABLE_MACHINE
[18:48:23] CoreStatus = 7A (122)
While my gpu doesn't show any artifacts in ATItool and survives under that fuzzy-donut gpu benchmark test, it still appears to be crashing.

I imagine that all I would have to do is back off the clocks on my GPU, correct? Core or RAM clocks? Or do I have an issue with my GPU going bad? (It's been pencil modded and is OC'd to 925c/2021s/970m)

Thanks for the help!

I would reduce the OC and see how that works out first. Also, try testing your GPU with OCCT GPU test.
