Default i7 Folding Questions?

Hey OCN!

Got a few questions for someone if they may know.

Which do you think the best combo is for an i7:

A)All 8 threads stressed?
B)4 threads with HT on?
C)4 threads with HT off?
D)Something else?

FAHmon shows me getting almost 10k from my i7 with 8 threads stressed. But I'm wondering if it is going slower and faster because of the slight performance boost with HT vs. real cores.

What is everyone else seeing real world since FAHmon can sometimes show skewed results?

Here's a good thread about folding with an i7. I think most people find the best ppd with HT turned off but you'll have to experiment and see which works best for you.

That would be SMP.
I would be interested in Vmware.

I have had great success with Error10's VM clients on my quads. Each instance fully stresses 2 cores (or threads) so if you're running with HT on you'd run 4 instances of the VM client, or 2 instances with HT off.

I'm not sure if its best to fold with HT on or off with an i7 though, so I can't help you with that.

Question being:
Would Vmware give more PPD with

4 apps running and HT on?

OR

2 apps and HT off

I run 3 x error10 vmware client. I get about 2700 to 2800 on each, cpu @3.8 HT on
If I run the fourth Vmware, I will lose to much PPD on the gpu folding.

I've been running 4x error10 clients with priority set to low so I don't disrupt GPU folding. The past 2 days I've been running 3x instead. I'm wondering if running 2x with HT off will be better, but I don't know.

I run the same but with 2 GPU clients. I would also be interested in the results with 2 clients and HT off. Guess the best way to compare is to try both options for a few days and check the results.

When I get my WC'ing installed (hopefully this weekend) I will compare a few different options. It's been high 80's here all weekend and without the AC on, it's simply too hot to full load the i7.

I used to do 2 clients with HT off and got maybe 6-7kppd, then went to 3 clients with HT on and started getting 9k easily (assuming the clients didn't give errors). I found usually that going to 4 clients tended to drop the speed of each client resulting in only a very small gain in ppd over 3 clients. Running 3 clients also has the advantage of not fully loading the CPU so you don't really have to worry about priority.
