As the thread title says, I'm considering folding. I do have a few questions I would like to see answered first though.
What are our computers actually processing? I understand it is for cancer research, but what exactly are they emulating or trying to study? What kind of resources does folding consume on a computer? Will it lag my laptop in WC3 / CSS? Will is hog my connection? Can I run the daemon on my web server without it lagging my clients? I leave my computer on 24/7, my housing is paid for by the Military so I don't care about electricity, so I believe between my web server, laptop, and desktop (in my sig) I could contribute a nice chunk to the community. Please let me know, I want to know if I'm actually helping cancer research, or if this just bandwagon trendy thing to do.

http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...ifference.html It uses your CPU/GPU for 100% No gaming when folding. However you don't game 24/7 so folding will be worth it when you don't ![]() Quads and Dualcores best client is the VMware apps. read http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...made-easy.html and http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...are-w-usb.html Error10's gives more PPD but Notfred is better for monitoring with Fahmon/Fahspy. http://www.overclock.net/faqs/71068-...y-folding.html I trust stanford, if they are lying then I am indeed wasting my PC and electricity for nothing. Just assume they do not.

they both output about the same PPD ... notfred's client gives me ~6040PPD when i run it at night and ~5800PPD during the day when i used my pc for whatever. i find that notfred's client is much more reliable and u can proper monitor your PPD ![]() in over 40WU done with notfred's client only one time they both crapped out on me and even that time i think it was a power surge and my pc shut down ruining my WUs compared to error10's client who failed me 2 times out of 4WU before uninstalling it.

Rook_ you might want to check out the guide in my sig for more details on folding@home and the clients. On your system you can run 2 vmware clients and a single GPU client (preferably the console one and hide them both with TrayIt! as I describe in the guide).
It is possible to play games with SMP vmware running, but not with the GPU client running; it will most likely cause the gpu client to lose its work unit.
