Experimental program. Not fool nor fail proof. Consider this beta. I guarantee nothing but don't expect anything tragic to happen if you run it. If someone is feeling adventurous and is willing to help please try running it and report back. Thanks =) Meant to work on Windows XP and Windows 7. Meant for people who set up (SMP) folding@home on computers often or want to install vmware folding@home on multiple computers. This guide assumes windows is installed on your C: hard drive. You can always edit the .bat and .reg files to suit your needs / setup. They are simple enough for the average geek to understand. Download this file. Extract the version you need (32 or 64bit) in C:\ The directory should look like this: ![]() Grab the latest vmware player from here, rename it to "VMware-Player.exe" and place it in C:\VMWI. Download Notfred's Virtual Appliance from here and extract it in C:\VMWI. The C:\VMWI directory should now contain the following: ![]() Quote:

Pages I have learnt from: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137890 http://research.stowers-institute.or...yerService.htm http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=197 And one more which I can't find right now. Good luck. v0.3 (10 Sep 2k9) (Windows 7 support. 64bit support.)

I'm not running XP, so this is a no can do for me. However, I was hoping something like this would pop up and make it easy for those of us who couldn't get Notfreds to work. Hopefully someone will adapt this for W7.
+rep for a very helpful post.

It could work on Windows 7 if you run it as administrator. Registry entries should be the same but I can't guarantee it. I'll do some proper testing on 7 when I have some time.
Basically this makes things more complex for the average user, unless you want a vmware that runs as a service like me, but makes bulk installations a lot faster.

There was a crucial problem with the one initially uploaded.
Fixed now, upgraded to v0.1. Testing on windows 7 tomorrow. Please uninstall vmware player before running this.

care to elaborate a little? Followed your instructions on 7, seems ok (other than smp reading hung...)

I stand corrected. The service starts, but doesnt do anything. I had to load VMWare, login as root, exit, login as root, and exit again for it to start smp. I think I timed out at the login screen overnight, and got a "hung".
Also, the "start service" brings up cmd for a few tics, then goes away. No core usage change or anything... Don't know if that info is useful to you or not. Just trying to help a brotha out.

You should be running everything as Administrator.
Checked all directories letter by letter? If the client hangs then there's no reason the service should work either. Use manual_start.bat before manual_stop.bat. Edit those two files with notepad and add a new line in the end of each and type pause in it. If it was the previous version it will not work, period. Sorry. If you had installed the previous version or want to do a reinstallation of the one you have now: 1) Start->Run->services.msc and stop Virtualserver 2) Open CMD and type "instsrv VirtualServer REMOVE" 3) Uninstall vmware player and reboot. 4) And then install again, with the latest .zip. Under Task Manager's processes at least vmware.exe should appear when the service runs. Thanks for taking the time to test this out. ![]() I will have a copy of Windows 7 by tomorrow to test. *I should also make an uninstaller.

...it seems to be working (took awhile to get info from servers...I think they are having problems, as GPU took awhile tonight too).
The service didnt work however. Had to manually start VMWare. I'll check back tomorrow morning, and see how it went.

dang...hung again.
When you say checked all directories letter by letter you meant cross-referenced with your pics right?

Yeah that's what I meant. If the client itself hangs it's an issue of the client itself and not of this program. Try increasing its RAM.
Other than that, you're using a 64bit version of windows which means vmware player is installed in "Program Files (x86)" while in RunOnce.bat and registry entries it is "Program Files". I have a bit of work to do. Especially if srvany.exe and instsrv.exe are not compatible with windows 7.
